there are really no gray market colors for the most part porsche does offer all there colors for all there models for all over the world market .
so it's not like you could only get a color in only one country . i have stated this many times the color name has no meaning at all . only the color number/ code is importent . because i'm still looking into the color code i'm not sure yet if the name is some thing porsche called it or because of some reason BASF just stuck that name on it . over the years porsche has changed the names and even the color code on some of there colors only to find they are the same color from years past . if i had your car in my shop i would color max the color on your car . color max are real spray out chip/ cards BASF does for just this reason . color carmeras are only about 70% accurate so you will not get a spot on match from them . because i crossed the 54 line to the 55 line and they are solvent based it will do nothing for you having to spray the car in a water borne system so it's totaly useless to any one were they have to spray water borne color coats . as for the interior i only headed the coatings dept at porsche so that is not any thing i would be able to track down . i do have a funny fealing that your car may have come with the black interior and not the white one you have now ? white interiors became very popular in the mid 1980's to the early 1990's so it could have been changed when the color of the car was ? one why you maybe able to tell is to see what type of glue they used to hold some of the pieces in the car . |
....found an original picture of my 930. Paint looks similar in color to the posts above, ive color matched it as best i could and my car is going jnto the body shop for a repaint to "original" guise. Just wish exact paint specs were available! White interior is original.

this one is listed as Marathon Blue not sure of the code however |
76 turbo That sure looks like ice blue metallic to me but that is paint code 360, the car below (DML) is code 358 as I popped door open to get code.

I thought I would update this 358-9-3 paint thread as the comments and suggestions posted have helped me immensely in getting through the daunting repaint-back-to-orginal process. We found an extremely closely matching Audi-sourced paint, matched using the original painted door and window jams of the car.

Hoping 2015 will be the year to get her back on the road |
about 4 or 5 months ago BASF emailed me the paint formula for 358 until now I didn't know why they did as I forgot about this posting .

Here is Marathon blue again. It is difficult to capture the richness of this color in photos, but I keep trying.

Thanks! |
I'd be happy to pay 962Porsche to share the BASF fomula they emailed... If only to end this mission & see how close I color matched the paint --- would be greatly appreciated! 👍
dml - I looked closely at L96M and it was definitely 'more blue' than original paint found in window jams of this 358 paint coded car. ...speaking of which the engine has been rebuilt, her new upholstered interior is currently getting installed. Progress is being made, maybe next year it'll be ready for the Werks reunion. Ha! Quote:

we seem to be on our own on this....

Old thread I know, but I spoke with the advertiser of this 75 911 Carrera, and it has color code 358 9 3 as well, so there is one more... SmileWavy |
Let me look through Ryan's book on the Carrera 2.7, there is some excellent information on the various paint codes used from 74-77. He is about to publish a book the 3.0 turbo's that will contain how many were painted the various paint codes. I will post any further information on code 358 I can find.

The key to that paint code lies in the last 3 in the paint code. 2 would designate a basf or glasurit. I don’t know if the 3 is a Herbert’s product designation or not. If I recall correctly the last digit 1-4 designated the brand of paint used and the only one I can remember is 2 for BASF.

Add another to the list. I just bought a barn find 1978 911SC with stamped 358-9-3 in the door jam. It needs a respray after everything else is done.
It has a terrible color change paint job to Hell Blau but I can see the silver blue PTS color underneath in spots. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754135162.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754135162.jpg |
Ryan Snodgrass, in his book Carrera 2.7, notes that a 1975 ROW Carrera 911 560 0077 was painted Marathon Blue Metallic (358-9-3). Page 119...:)

You are correct. I just got an email back from BASF paint specialist saying: “Hello James,
It looks like the POR 358-9-3 corresponds with VW L96M, Marathonblau Met.” Plus the 2nd pic here is a dead ringer for same color imo. https://www.instagram.com/p/CkCZavrpaU5/?img_index=1&igsh=MXNkamRtZ21ub2cwZA== |
