Number plate on rear engine tin?
I am looking at an engine (P84944, '59 356B/1600S according to B. Johnson book). It has a stainless or aluminum tag on the rear tin which says "AMAG Lauf No. 3789". Is that a rebuilder's ID? Any educated guesses (or even dumb ones) appreciated.
