Air leaking into intake?

I'm running Dells in my '65 SC. The engine really bogs down when I give it gas. Sounds like as soon as it gets past the idle jets, I guess going into the main circuit, the engine just wants to die. I was looking for leaks in the system and pulled off the starboard side intake manifold to reinstall with new gasket and sealant and when I looked in the 2 ports going into the engine, (not the manifold), the port for cylinder #2 is really clean looking, the port for cylinder #1 is jet black with soot.

So, does this mean there was a leak between the manifold and the port for cylinder #1?

Thanks all,

Keep the faith.
