Position of con rods on crank?
Hi guys,
Is there a given order on how to position con rods on crank? Walter Odental on Youtube claims part numbers should always face towards the crank pulley, but after dismateling two cases now, positioning of the rods seem to be pretty erratic, see attached pic. No pic of the other crank as it still sits in a case, but can see the rods and only one rod faces the pulley with the part number. What is the correct way? Dennis

There is a reference in the archives discussing the position of the notch for the bearing shell tabs of the rod cap with respect to the direction of rotation of the crank. Aside from that, generically, if the big end has 2 different size chamfers, then the larger chamfer faces the crank and the smaller chamfer faces the adjacent rod. None of my 356 nor 912 repair manuals (Elfrink, Clymer) address the issue. There are also other discussions by Pellow and the Maestro that discuss rod orientation with respect to the bearing shell tab.
I rebuilt a 912 and also 2 different 58 356 Normal engines in a past life and do not recall that I payed much attention to orientation other than the numbers all facing the same direction. All of those engines ran smoothly and reliably for the duration of my ownership.
