A bell housing from a VW Bus (1968-1971) will work just as well. I just went through this same thing. They are also easier to find and easier to mount to something (ie engine stand).
The second phone call I made to one of the local independent VW garages yielded a used transmission for free (+ $50 to dig it out of storage). That transmission has a seperate bell housing.
Only the years listed above will work. The only modification needed is to drill out the starter pinion bushing. I drilled mine out to .5" - a little oversized but I had the drill bit and for a test stand it works fine. I bolted it to my drill press table centered on the original bushing hole and then ran the .5" drill through the bushing.
Before the transmission went in the dumpster I cut off the input shaft to use as a clutch alignment tool - a bonus.

Or you can buy a starter adapter ring and complete test stand from www.zalexindustries.com

engine test stand

Beautiful test stands indeed. I looked at these with desire. However two things stopped me from pursuing these.

1) Its not possible to rotate the engine on the stand once mounted. Have to take it off and put it on another stand for that. What do you do if you find a leaky seal....

2) Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too expensive.......for me.

Thanks

You can rotate your engine (and run it!) with a conventional V8 engine stand and the Zalex adapter ring. $199

adaptor ring

Gee I wish you had told me that yesterday. I just stopped by the local VW shop and got a bell housing to use for engine testing.....for free.

Sorry, bad timing.....Just updated the zalexindustries website last night with new information such as the V8 stand.

If you don't build engines all the time, you might be interested in leasing a stand? Might save you some time.

If you want to lease just the adapter ring, I suppose that is possible too. Give me a call if you are interested.
Thanks,
Tom Perazzo

Nice set up. Did you fabricate that steel plate that interfaces the bellhousing to the stand? Looks well done.
Cheers,
Tom
