My 65 356c cab was in hurricane sandy. We're doing the engine and the builder says my crank has 2 stress cracks. Should I replace it ? Does anyone have one for sale ?

+1

There are enough examples of broken cranks. I had one break in a B engine and one that I had bought at a swap meet appeared to be cracked (both on the first rod journal. If I am correct is that the common spot to crack and eventually break).

Hi Brian,

Stress cracks lead to this, replace your crank with the best one you can find. I have an SC crank that needs pins, and it should be good to go, I would be willing to sell it- I believe it's a STD/STD. Please PM me if you'd like more information on it. Enjoy your evening.

These pictures are from a motor that still ran, but would not idle worth a darn, it never got to the point of total catastrophe!

James

Sorry for being so late to the party...

Even if you can find a used German crankshaft, you really can't tell how much it has been stressed even if its not showing stress cracks. There are aftermarket options that are available: both Scat and AA sell chrome-moly lightweight cranks for $2250 and $1200, respectively. AA also offers a billet crank at around $1800.

I have had a broken crank happen in my 912 and even with a replacement German crank and ~40,00 miles, I opted for a new crank. Be aware that these cranks are being forged in China with finish machining being done stateside. I understand that AA quality is very good at this point. It may sound like a lot of money to spend, but it buys peace of mind...

I have a brand new / never used AA chrome-moly lightweight crank that I purchased with the intent of installing it in my 912 but did not need. I will sell it to you for $900 if you want it. Let me know
