Odyssey 925

Just had a 9 month old Odyssey go DOA, 5.4 volts this morning. Car is a garage queen however I do put it on a high tech trickle charger every couple of weeks if not driving much. Anyone had problems with these batteries. Brought it online sent company a message today would not think warranty will be an issue

I've owned five Odysseys used in several different vehicles over the last 15 years, two have failed quite early in their lives. Both times I was told that it was doubtful that the battery was at fault because of the stringent quality control and testing done by Odyssey. Both times they did end up being bad and were replaced at no cost to me under warranty. The last one that died was purchased direct from Odyssey and was a pain to get replaced. They suggested buying from a third party vendor for easier warranty service. I did get almost 13 years out of one though.

The type of charger you use with Odyssey's in essential. The first one I had, over twenty years ago failed due to the charger, an old tech Schumacher. Since then I have used the Odyssey brand charger. The oldest battery I have now is over 12 years. The charger type must be matched to the type of battery. These chargers are designed for the Odyssey dry cell and will work on any AGM battery. I am not sure if there is another type charger that is appropriate for the dry cell.

This is very true. Just switched my stock battery to an Odyssey. I leave on this trickle charger anytime I am not driving it.

The 6amp will not work for a 925. The odyssey site has the specifics for each battery.

Here is the link: ODYSSEY battery - Ultimizer

I have the Ultimizer 25 amp and I can use it for any battery. As a matter of fact my hot rod neighbors all come over if they need a big boost to cure their Corvette or Mustang dead battery. I highly recommend this charger. The cost is about $155 USD.

Anyone using an Optima charger to charge and/or maintain their Odyssey 925? If so, what profile setting are you using? (#1 - high performance AGM starting batteries / #2 high performance AGM deep cycle batteries / #3 standard flooded lead-acid and AGM batteries - large)

TIA

Jason

My long term experience with Odyssey Batteries, including 925s, is to use the Odyssey charger. That said the key thing is that you do NOT USE A TRICKLE charger on these batteries for long term storage. It will destroy the battery. But the best information would be to give Odyssey and Optima a call to discuss this. The Optima seems to be a float charger, which is good; but I would contact the vendors.

So what's the best way to maintain a Oddysey PC925 if not being used for months at a time? If If I purchase the 12A charger would I put battery on charger monthly?

If you use the Odyssey Charger https://www.odysseybattery.com/ChargersAccessories/BatteryChargers
You just leave it on the battery and turn it on. It is a float so it essentially cuts charging when the battery reaches a given proper voltage.

If just using as a maintainer , wouldn’t the 6amp be better with its small disconnect leads ?
Looking at their website it should be ok on a good battery for storage , but will just take longer to charge a less than full battery ?

I've been using Yuasa battery maintainers on Odyssey batteries for about 12 years (including the mini-beef PC680) - 1 amp and float mode at 14.4 volts. Never had a problem even when the charger was on a battery for many months at a time. I also use these chargers on regular, flooded cell batteries of all sizes, and very small, AGM batteries that make the PC680 seem big by comparison.

Why the recommendation for a 12V charger for the small Odyssey batteries?

Here's the Yuasa -

Sounds like a good option. Float mode to maintain. The only major benefit the Odyssey charger provides over the Yuasa maintainer is that it will recover a deeply discharged Odyssey battery. But of course the Odyssey charger does cost considerably more.

Good point, Dan; the very low amp chargers are not good at recovering very discharged batteries (I've tried that, and they do not work).
