993tt to GT2 clone

Bought the best candidate for a GT2 clone ever. (pretty much my favorite car) Car is a 1997 993turbo in artic silver. Has been a customer car for 10+ years and driven only on Sundays and maybe a few Saturdays also. Spent time doing DE's and was built back when these cars were worth maybe $50k. Original doors and fenders with good gaps and a whole bunch of rock chips up front. Converted to two wheel drive when I first got it back in September. Got rid of 80lbs weight in one day. From there it went to metal guy to get sunroof welded up. He cuts the opening larger by approx. 1" so there is no rolled lip anymore. From there he rolls a flat piece of sheet to get the right curve and tig welds it in place. Came out beautiful and needing almost no filler. More pics to come. Car is almost ready for paint. very cool! did the GT2 of the era have any of the bits from the widebody NA RSR's race cars suspension and chassis wise?

DonNewton 12-09-2018 06:55 AM

Sure would like to get rid of the sunroof in my SC. . . Lame excuse to post and subscribe to this thread, I know.

yep, but there were lots of difference too.

The street Gt2 suspension was more closely related to the 993RS

Hey @skidmark,

Is this one of your engine builds? Would have been in 2007 according to the receipts:

Thanks,
Charles

Did Porsche not have rear fender vents on that model of Turbo? Will you be adding them?

Street and early race did not, late race did

Good catch Charles. Car looked nothing like that then

RSBob 12-11-2018 04:24 PM

When you are done are you anticipating a greater value or is that not an issue? I really don’t know how values are influenced for this kind of change.

skidmark 12-11-2018 04:37 PM

Mine with flairs. I SCOURED the internet looking for pics of how factory steel fenders got cut with no luck. Fortunately I have a customer with an original GT2 street car and he was totally cool about bringing his car by so I could rack it and take lots of pictures. His were cut back so much I decided to cut mine after they are painted so they can sand and buff the surface without it distorting like a wet noodle. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1544578533.JPG

I am rolling the dice on this one over value increase or decrease. Most of my BAT hot rod sale money is going right back into this car (at least whats left) I figure if the market is hot for aircooled hotrod builds then this car could almost be considered the ultimate clone. In some ways it will be better than a stock GT2 with suspension upgrades and some HP upgrades while I am rebuilding the motor. The market for this car could be for the person that has an original GT2 that they don't want to drive as often or as hard also. I'd love to call this car a "keeper" but there is always something else that will catch my eye down the road.

Should also mention that sorry to say the red wheels will be going away after the body shop is done painting car. Leaning towards BBS E88 wheels with retro gold centers. 12's in back and 9's in front with LOTS OF LIP! (only a little stretch though)

If one of you has to have them I could be talked out of them. Kinesis 8 and 11" by 18" and 80% r6 hoosiers bought this year.

skidmark 12-31-2018 03:00 PM

Body shop is prepping car and could be painted within two weeks. Motor has less than 50k miles but I am rebuilding top-end anyways. Exhaust valve guides were worn so they were replaced and full valve job. I ported intake side of heads and also am running a set of 1995 993 n/a cams. With the 1.bar boost remap I am hoping for 550hp. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1546300768.JPG

why the n/a cams?, they are less happy than even the stock tt

skidmark 12-31-2018 03:51 PM

I did a RUF 600 hp kit on a customer TT years ago and they sent new n/a 993 cams in the kit. My cam grinder said the n/a cams are bigger however I should double check that since you bring it up. The next step up is 3.8rs cams but they get a bit too lumpy at idle

Here are the specs I have, the street GT2 has been hard to nail down, the others I'm sure of

Back from body shop just a few days ago. I pulled the doors before paint so they could shoot the jambs at the same time as rest of car with no masking lines. Came out amazing. Spent my s Saturday cutting the fenders and hanging flairs.
CAUTION! The next pictures below may be disturbing to 993 owners!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1547340674.JPG

The NA cams are a nice mild upgrade over stock TT. I’ve played around with various grinds and could recommend something better. The GT2 cams are a bit aggressive for street so we ended up using a RS intake profile and GT2 exhaust profile on a 115-116 lobe center. Makes for a broad fat power curve! Check with John Dorgerty I think it’s called DC21 or possibly DC22.

500whp will be easy on the current setup with the right turbos. 60mm-67mm seems to be the sweet spot for compressors. Personally I like the GTX2863 in this application. If dedicated track car step up turbine to GT30 so it will run cooler. The real limit will be CHT’s. E85 is a game changer for that!

Good luck! Love the build!!!

Thanks for input. I put a degree wheel on motor and the n/a cams are definitely bigger than factory turbo which makes sense because Porsche is usually more interested in throttle response than outright power. I would be happy with 450whp on the stock turbos and current set up. But not for long...

Agreed. Love the black. I was just happy to get a "correct " GT2 color.

Great project.
I have a factory Porsche Motorsports 993 GT2 3.8 EVO engine, rear deck lid, wheels, factory quarters and other parts if you need any :)

Stock all the 993 tt, GT2, GT2 Evo & Turbo S are single plug.

Once tuners got ahold of them they switched to the twin plug setups

Driver door assembled. My front splitter should show next week along with brake cooling scoops sporting projector lights.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1548546622.JPG

skidmark 02-10-2019 08:29 AM

Front splitters still at paint so I rolled out for some butt shots. Forgeline came through with very nice wheels. 9 and 12 by 18". I almost ordered BBS E88 but I like their take on version of that wheel. Centers powdercoated semi-transparent so you can see the machine marks.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1549819554.JPG

I got to keep the Sparco seats from my Voodo Blue car that went to Chicago. They are going in my 993 along with the same charcoal carpet that Jims Upolstery did in my blue car. All the grey leather in the car has been dyed black and the gauges in the dash got a refresh. This is the seats in my SC before it left. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1550024917.JPG
