NA or ROW origin for 1971 911T - VIN and engine number
Hello Pelicans,
Through these forums I've been able to learn quite a bit about my 911T based on the codes that make up the VIN. But I still have questions about it based on what I've discovered about its history. First, here are the basics. The VIN is 9111110142. The engine number is 6114247. Here's how I have been translating the VIN: 911 = model (first three digits) 1 = 1971 1 = Engine type 911T 1 = Targa (0=coupe, 1=Targa, 2=Karman-built coupe) 0142 = sequential number. Likely built Aug-Dec 1970 prior to winter break. And the engine number: 6 = 6-cylinder 1 = Engine type 911T 1 = 1971 4 = 911/07 USA/CDN 247 = sequential number So seems like the engine number (sequence-wise) is a good match for the VIN and likely original. Here's where it gets interesting. Though I purchased the car from a wholesaler (sadly with no records), I've since learned that this 911T was owned for over 30 years by Tom Shaudis (a.k.a. mossguy), who sadly passed away in 2014. In one of Tom's Pelican posts, he states that he bought the car in Germany in 1976 from the original owner. This explains the metric speedometer, the H4 headlights and a few other things. Why, however, would the engine number and stamp (911/07) indicate a USA/CDN engine? I'm scratching my head on this one. Are my interpretations of the numbers incorrect? I would think that a 1971 911T purchased in Germany in 1976 would have a 911/03 ROW engine stamp and associated fourth digit engine number code. Tom also posted about this 911T having the "S außtattung". (Außtattung being German for furnishing, I believe). It does have an S front spoiler. I have seen references online to S gauges also being a factory option, but am not sure how they would be different from a standard T. What else might be included with the S options package on a T? If any of you knew Tom and this car, I would love to hear from you. It's in wonderful shape. I feel very fortunate to be it's current caretaker. - Rich |

Interesting, early Porsche serial numbers have always been a puzzle and frankly I gave up deciphering some time ago. Your thread re-sparked my interest particularly for the engine number which previously I did not pay much attention.
I have a supposedly Canadian ‘71 T coupe registered in late 1970 with engine #6111607. You say that the forth digit identifies the intended destination countries. Would you know what the number 1 would mean? Sorry to have highjacked your thread. Johan

No worries, Johan. It's the sharing of information that makes this such a great resource.
I'm using the Engine code information posted on Stuttcars: https://www.stuttcars.com/porsche-911-engine-numbers-1965-1989/ For a 1971 911T, Engine numbers from 611 4001 onward should designate manual transmissions and the USA/CDN marketplace. 611 9501 onward is for sportomatics. Looks like your engine number, 611 1607, should fall in the ROW series. Does your engine also have a 911/03 stamp? That's what the engine number would suggest, based on this table. - Rich |

Rich,
Well, I'll be dammed! My case is clearly stamped 911/03. Wonder how this ROW motor ended up in Canada. I have not got much history on the car but it clearly it went through many iterations over the years-from teenage boom box and 200 lbs of stereo in the '80's, conversion to turbo flares and impact bumpers badly done to I think a race car of sorts. I'll have to dig into its past a bit more. Johan
