exhaust studs, special tool?

Is there a special tool to install/remove the exhaust studs? I have a picture in my mind of a socket looking deal with cam locks inside. Does this exist?

Excellent, Thanks. I wonder if these also work for installing or are they one way only? Site calls the extractors.

The stud extractors I have used all damage the threads at least a little, even the snap-on version. Just a heads up.

exhaust studs generally don't come out, regardless of what you do. they just break off. maybe one in 20 comes out. the ones toward the outside are too close to the cam tower to get anything on them anyways.

John,

I took my shorty headers off last night and about a third of the studs came out easily with the nut. Granted I have been hitting them with penetrating fluid for months(yes I was paranoid and the motor was just sitting there anyway, so). The studs look pretty nasty, are you saying I am going to have trouble if I try to replace them all? Should I reuse the ones that are in there even though they look a little rough( surface rust etc..)

The best tool is a machine shop. I replaced all of my exhaust studs a few months ago. Three or four came out easily, giving me a false sense of hope. I broke a couple studs off, then broke off a screw extractor inside a stud. Then I called the shop. Good Luck.

once in a while you get lucky and several will come out with the nut, but it doesn't happen often. if the stud is useable, i think you should leave well enough alone.

Fair enough, I will take your advice and let sleeping dogs lie. Thanks again.
