Remove gear shift rod with engine in

Hi’

Explanation:
Did a engine swap in my 1971 Porsche 911. Installed a 1981 3.0 engine with 915 gearbox. Also changed the gear shifter bracket in the car.

I took the chance and kept the old gear shifter rod, as I read it worked for some. But it was not the case for me.

Question:
Can I change the gear shifter rod without removing the engine again ?

Beautiful! Thanks!

I have the old gear shifter rod for my old 901 gearbox, now with the 915 installed I couldn’t get it in to 1st, 3rd and 5th gear because the rod was too long. And there wasn’t enough adjustment length to sort out the problem.

HI Swalsted

you should be able to get front/rear adjustment on the gearbox connection, by the clamp bolt/nut, as the shaft will slide in/out as well as Left/Right

have you changed the gear lever and housing for a 915 type

HI Swalsted

the shaft in your car, looks like from the parts list, that the shaft did not change for the manual box untill 1974, unless you had a Sporto box fitted, then it is the correct shaft

1971-1973 shaft for manual box 901 424 021 01 (now N L A )

1974--on shaft for manual box 911 424 020 00 UK price £130.96 + vat

1971--on shaft for sporto box is 911 424 020 00 (same as late manual)

Just to end this thread with an answer and solution for my problem.

Before I read the actual solution to removing it without removing the engine, I found out that my rod was only 1,5 cm. too long. So I took my angle grinder and Dremel and startet to cut it. It took a little work as the workspace is limited. But it worked and I used the same original clamp to tighten it again. Oh year - minor detail - I did in the rear end where it connects to the gear box, from the hole that you can access from the backseats.

So I didn’t buy a new and saved the money. Tested it. A little adjustment and it was perfect.
