remove knobs on 86 dash heather control

I want to take them off, but they seem to be put on very solidly. Scared to break something. Is there a trick involved?

I believe they are bonded onto the control so you have to be very careful so as not to break them.

Pretty sure the factory glued then on. It is German glue and not the real strong, unless you want to the knobs. On my old 914 with the same heat and vent knobs the knobs fell off one at a time and I had to glue them on again.

It's been an exercise in patience and systematic approach....
The black knobs went off simply by pulling. The red one did not want to move at all. I decided to heat it. I first covered the back with a 'shell' of paper tape. It's NOT sticking to the back panel, so that no heat is transferred. Then carefully heating the knob with a gun, but in multiple steps of say 30 seconds so that the heat has time to reach the metal slider inside and can loosen up. If you try to warm it up in one go the plastic will melt. It took about 20-30 cycles to get it moving a bit. Then I used a plastic tool (for trim removal), resting on a metal backplate to pop it off.

take solid piece of wood, cut a slot in it, slide over lever behind knob, hit with hammer *pop*

edit: pardon, this is for the earlier double-lever controls

I just break mine off and buy new ones.

Not on purpose, mind you.
