Lug Nut Education

How interchangeable are lug nuts wheel-to-wheel? By that I mean are the conical faces compatible/safe wheel-to-wheel, car to car? (Assuming threads and other variables are the same.)

Reason for the question is that I’m looking for some spares compatible with my SC and Simmons wheels. Would other nuts, like stock Porsche lug nuts, work safely?

Lug Nut Education Please

Question on lug nuts. Is the conical face on all lug nuts the same? By that I mean can you use any lug nut with any wheels (assuming diameter and threads are the same of course).

The reason for this question is that I am looking for some spares for the Simmons wheels on my SC and all I seem to be coming up with on searches are generic Porsche-compatible nuts.

I tried to post this yesterday and it never showed up. Also I noticed no other changes in the board either. Forum malfunction perhaps?

There are 2 main types of seats used on automobiles
ball
cone

Porsche oe wheels use an R13 ball as do VW, & Audi

you need to be careful as there are sizes of ball seats R14 being a common one

here is an R14 next to an R13

Mercedes used 12mm ball sockets.
No mixing seat sizes or wheels fall off no matter the tourque.

Alloy nuts can crack at the base and a real PITA to fix. If you AX, DE, swap wheels a lot or race, consider open headed s/s nuts.

They sell lug nuts without specifying what type of RIM you need to use...... that should tell you lug nuts are compatible with any rim.

If there is a nagging doubt ask your local tyre person

Lug nuts are not compatible with any wheel. Porsche used radius (ball) lug nuts while most companies use conical lug nuts. Radius and conical lug nuts are not interchangeable.
