Safely Disable CDI Ignition?
Pelicans,
What's the safest way to disable the CDI ignition system for cranking without spark to build oil pressure? |
I always pull the coil wire off of the distributor cap, while I crank to build oil pressure after sitting for a extended period of time.

I disconnect the plug at the bottom of the CDI (and that way it has zero power).
If I remember correctly, just pulling the coil wire leaves the CDI active and it still wants to spark when the distributor triggers it. Probably OK to do if you place the coil wire someplace that it can still arc to ground. |

Unplug the white “T” plug beside the CDI with the red wires. All power to CDI is gone and a lot easier than pulling the 6 pin. (Unless it’s a turbo)
Depending on the year, you also lose Tach or FP safety switch at the same time. But FP is not wanted and RPM signal won’t matter for priming oil pressure. |
