Figured it would be a good idea to do any cleaning before the heads come off. Some 99 cent store grill and oven cleaner works like a charm👍. I’ve used it on other aluminum block engines before without issue, same here.

Whelp..not the news i was hoping for. I guess the cylinders are coming off too

And to make matters worse..a piston ring broke while pulling off the last cylinder.

They're Nikasil cylinders (stamped Mahle and also magnetic) and the cross hatching looks fine. I had heard people having issues with resealing new rings on old cylinders. I posted a new thread about this specific concern of mine here (https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/1114897-new-piston-rings-without-removing-heads.html#post11638061).

I've never done piston rings or had an engine this far apart before so i'm definitely feeling a bit nervous.

I just ordered a tool from amazon to help remove the headstuds. It should be here tomorrow. Will let the headstuds soak in some penetrating fluid until it arrives tomorrow.

I found this video and finally have the confidence to replace the piston rings. I had no idea pistons could be installed from the bottom of the cylinder! ha.

Now lets hope these head studs don't fight me more..

Kevin Skene 03-22-2022 05:24 PM

I managed to remove all the head studs without pulling out any of the case threads. Thank heavens.

Only one stud gave me a scare..it twisted 5-6 times before actually starting to unscrew

This week I'm dropping off the assembled heads, cam towers, etc and cylinders off to competition engineering. I heard they're the go-to machine shop for these cars.

They're going to have the parts for a number of weeks, so I guess i'll have to get started on everything else! Any suggestions for needed chassis replacements after 44 years? Thinking fuel tank and lines at a minimum..

Fuel lines for sure while it is out. Check your engine harness as well. And what’s bout your sound pad?

Perfect time to look after the rear suspension components. Trailing arm bushings are a PIA with engine in. Rear wheel bearing replacement and parking brake refresh while your in there. There are many many excellent threads on that here. You’ll be glad you did! Great to see another Targa getting prepped for the road!

I was taught by one of the best P-Car guys alive (Dan Jacobs - "Dan J" here I believe) to remove the studs you cut them down to stick out about 2" and use heat on the aluminum surrounding the threads, THEN use the puller. Too late for you, but may help someone in the future... you got lucky on that twisted stud, could have sheared at the base.

Well! Heads, cylinders and flywheel have been dropped off at Competition Engineering. Beautiful drive out there. Worth the gas $$.

Today, despite having a broken latch pin on the targa top,
I got it removed and found the wheel lug key so
I can take a look at the wheel bearings.

Cleaning these pistons have been a hoot. I’m scraping off the burnt on carbon with a plastic spoon and then letting the pistons soak in grill & oven cleaner. Not gonna beat the cost of the local 99 cent store. Scotch brite pads and brass bristle brushes ftw.

3 down, 3 to go. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648328120.jpg

I’m still shaking in my boots how while this car sat in “storage” (underground parking structure) people could have stolen anything they wanted, but instead they blew a whole fire extinguisher inside

One other suggestion while the engine is out is too fit a new ground strap from transmission to body- a bad strap can cause lots of electrical issues- clean the mounting locations before installing the new strap so you are getting a good connection.

Good luck on your build!

Good call! I just recently did a whole 12v solar / dc-dc battery charger in a late 90s mitsu montero i've got. So, i've got plenty of thick gauge wire around. A new ground strap should be cake. Thanks for the suggestion!

Bit of a lazy day over here. Did a basic wipe down on the interior and decided to tackle the “broken targa latch” that i couldn’t seem to find any guides on. One of the locking pins is broken so i took them both off and figured out how to replace them with the stainless versions that pelican sells. Once the new pins arrive I’ll likely post up the step by step on replacing them. Not too big of a job. Just need an angle grinder and likely a welder to tack them back together. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648421208.jpg

Well not the news i wanted. Here’s the inside of the fuel tankhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat5.gif

Definitely not what i wanted to see, but after sitting with 18 gallons of fuel for 20 years, i should have expectedhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649614593.jpg

Fuel tank is out, thinking i'm going to go this route with the cleaning methods.

Quick google search gives me this part.

**EDIT** Just ordered a Dansk PN 1615600200 instead.

Update - i'm just sitting, impatiently waiting.

- Fuel filler neck had chipped paint, so it's getting re-plated.

- Waiting on some cohline 7.5mm fuel line to arrive from overseas, everyone seems to be out of stock at the moment.

- Dansk fuel tank is installed.

- Found a used cylinder that i'm waiting for the machine shop to inspect

- Still looking for a right side cam.

That's about it!

:)

I have 100M of the good Cohline 7.5mm Hose, on the shelf.

You can have this tomorrow or Friday. How much do you need?

Len

Kevin,

Did you remove both intake and exhaust studs from the case? The one in the picture looks like the upper (intake cylinder head stud). Is this one steel and magnetic? Thanks.

Tony

24 feet would be good. I'll shoot you an email. Thanks Len!

Yeah, I removed all of the head studs. I don't recall exactly which side that bend up one was though. Anything I should be concerned about?
