Turbo tie rod spacer oddity
So I was pulling apart well...my whole car...but specifically the steering rack, and saw some strange things going on with my tie rods. The car previously had the turbo tie rods installed, but there appears to be the original spacer left over plus the turbo tie rod spacer on each side. Not only that but that original spacer looks beat to heck on one side. Is this how it's supposed to be, with both spacers? I don't know if it would cause any problems aside from using up more thread at the outer tie rod end.
The rest of the rack looks pretty okay so far in terms of metal wear. The upper pinion needle bearing fell apart when I pulled the pinion, but the wear surfaces are good. The paired spacers, original on left with new tucked inside of it. ![]() Someone took this off and put it on with a hammer and chisel, I think. These burs have marred the surface of the rack as well. ![]()

How the heck did they get a boot on there? The gold, original piece is discarded and only the thick washer is used.

Edit: Actually one of the big gold washers had some massive dents in the rim, so I can only imagine that the boots were pried on pretty aggressively.

You can get those off in 30 seconds with an air chisel. Makes you wonder what other surprises you may find. Some people shouldn’t be allowed to own tools.

So far I've been pretty lucky with abuse on this car, the only one that really got under my skin was that somebody used the wrong thread pitch for one of the two main bolts for the front suspension subframe. I cleaned it up and it holds torque, but what the hell. How does someone jam an M12 coarse thread bolt into an M12 fine thread hole?
