To Whaletail or Not To Whaletail...That is the Question
I have a narrow body Carrera cab without a whale tail and have considered adding one for a long time.
Looking at the comparison, which do you like better? Has anybody ever done this conversion? If so, are you pleased? Filled with regrets? BTW, this car is never going to be an all-original show car--it's just my hobby car, so I don't worry about deviating from the original specs. ![]()

Yes but do add the front lip, even if you are not running the whaltail

I generally like the whale tail (or tea tray) on wide body cars, and for narrow body prefer the look without it. However, both of those pics above look very good.

Technically that’s not a whale tail, it’s a Carrera spoiler. It’s a personal decision, but if it was my car I think the Cabriolet looks better without it, and i do have one on my coupe, original equipment.

As a cab owner myself, I’d say definitely no tail. IMHO
1. Looks cleaner/smoother w/o tail 2. Tails are for coupes - preferably wide-body 3. No aero advantage- cab is an aero mess, so just accept that - wing is just extra drag. 4. Wing on a cab makes it look like you are trying a little too hard. Leave it as is and drive it! |

I have a guards red targa, which came with a tail. I like the clean look myself, if you want to trade, send me a pm.

It's not like a tattoo - you can change back if you want to. Buy a decklid with the tail already mounted. Wait for something in your area as shipping is expensive.

Looks good both ways - there's no bad decision on this one.

Spoiler Name
I guess I had it backwards--I thought the whale tail was what the narrow body had and the widebody cars had a tea tray. Is the whale tail what a 930 has?

The early 930s had whale tails. 78 and up 930s have tea trays

Turbo = whale tail, everything else looks a poser. Try a Duck if you want a nice change and the front air dam for balance. I agree tho that the Porsche lines are broken with a convertible....stay stock.
