3.6 SC driving experience

I got the opportunity to check out and drive Moses' SC that has a 993 powerplant under the engine lid. The car is phenomenal; it pulls like you would not believe! No matter what gear or speed, it moves like a rocket..i mean it is scary fast. Surprisingly, it is very well mannered and not difficult to drive at all. It idles smoothly, unlike the CIS motor at times, and as soon as you hit the throttle it just goes. I have an SC and plan on doing the same conversion. It was nice to see and feel the final product. I know Moses had a lot of issues that came up during the course of putting this conversion together but his patience paid off. Nice car Mark and thanks for the driving pleasure!

Thanks Manny. My pleasure.

If any other Bay Area Pelicans are thinking about a 3.6 switch, contact me and we'll go for a drive.

Hey Manny,
I sure hope you didnt get a ticket driving that rocket! Or did you have to use 'professional courtesy' to get out of it? I hope you can get that project going already and Ill come visit again.

Luckily we didn't get stopped and I don't think anyone trying to stop us would have been able to keep up!! I will probably order a motor in the next month or so; the US dollar isn't holding well against the Euro so prices are a little higher than they were a few months ago. Elfer, did you get that 3.0 in yet?

Sounds like I need to plan an ogling side trip into my two weeks out there in June.

What's the latest on the dyno run interpretations ? It's going to be fun if you do find the varioram has more power lurking in the shadows

I've done an exhaustive search on euro-993 varioram power curves. Turns out the curves are just like mine until 5000 rpm. Mine flattens out, the variorams will push out another 30 - 35 HP above 5000. Steve Timmins tells me that hooking up the V-ram is simple- just attach a vacuum bottle. Of course if it's simple I'm sure to screw it up!

"I will probably order a motor in the next month or so"

Where are your ordering Euro spec motors from?
Any details would be appreciated on condition and prices.

I recommend Harald Julicher if you want a euro motor (speedster94).
The ROW 993 motors are OBDII and have a drive lockout in the computer that does not allow swaps. LA Porsche dismantlers told me they would re-program a ROW 993 for $250 to disable the lockout. At the time I bought my motor, I didn't know anyone who had done this.

Send a private message to code7rpd. He is current on all motor prices and euro/$ exchange rates.

Only problem with Harald is the current exchange rate. Hopefully it will come around again. I got my motor from him when the dollar was strong. It was a great deal.

Manny,

do it. The only thing I hate about mine is that I didn't do it much earlier. The engine was sitting in my garage for almost a year before a move sort of got me off my ass. The new house does not have that nice provision to lift the car (yet).

When I bought the engine from Harald the dollar was much stronger. I guess I lucked out there.

Moses,
I can't belive your VarioRam flap is not hooked up. Will this ever end where you get screwed. Get that vaccum cannister and put it on there. It's really simple: A couple of zip ties, some thin vacuum tubing and it should be good to go. All it does is to serve as a reservoir for the vaccum that actuates the flaps in the intake track.

Ingo, What type of cannister do I need and what do I hook it up to? Thanks!

I love it! It's already a sick-puppy hot ride and more horsepower is to be had with some simple plumbing

Moses,

the thing looks like a coke can and is mounted to the stock air box on newer cars. It's made from the same plastic. It has exactly one connection and hooks up to the vaccum valve that actuates the flap with a Y-piece.

On Timmens' website you see the thing strapped to the intake manifold with zip ties underneath the air filter.

Thanks Ingo!

Now I just gotta find that tube on the varioram it plugs into. Since I don't have the stock airbox, is it on the top of the V-ram induction pipes or to the right side?

Moses,

if you check the schematic there is a check valve (28) through which vacuum gets fed from the intake plenum to a four-way connector (29). (29) supplies vaccum to the cannister, the headlight adjustment and the solenoid valve that switches vacuum to the resonance flap (19).

You might have a three way connector instead of (29) or a two-way connector if someone rewired the vaccum. Just have a look.

The vacuum reservoir has only one connection and acts sort of like a storrage for vacuum. If you can't find the propper part any sturdy plastic vessel (maybe a power bleeder jar) and some tubing will do. Take a trip to home depot. It should be less than 1$ per HP (which is damn cheap for more power).

I wish I had bought a motor from Harald when I talked to him in March but as usual I procrastinated. Now I will pay through the nose and I would have thought twice but after driving in Moses' ride, I can't wait!

Moses-

I live in san fran and have my engine out right now. Can't decide what to do. The debate rages on in my head. I'd really appreciate a ride.

Thanks, Mark

I'm working the next three weeks without a day off, but after that we can make plans to get together and you can put it through the gears.

Sounds great. My car is down to bear metal right now, I'm in no hurry. But I just sold my old engine, so I'm going to have to make some kind of decision.

Give me a ring when you're free. 415.786.1002
