Turn Signals

Need diagnostic help. Chassis is 69 912, motor is 86 3.2. Have had intermittent turn signal issues where they just won’t work, then some time later are working again. Ghost in the machine sort of thing. This time they quit and will not work. Flashers are not working either. Fuses are good.

The 69 chassis has the dual fuse boxes in the frunk. There are several relays there as well. Thought the relay for the signals was under the dash, but could not locate.

Ideas? Turn signals and flasher not working and I thought they received power from separate circuits. I am probably wrong there since when turn signal does not work, flashers don’t as well.

While I am not an expert tech, if the flashers aren’t working either, it is likely the flasher relay. To access the relay, remove the far left gauge. Shine a light in there, and you can see and reach it. It may just need the connections cleaned if the problem is intermittent or it may need to be replaced.

Other possibilities: ground connection, fuses, bulbs or bulb connections

Agreed. Likely either the flasher or flasher ground...as the hazard and turn signal have different power sources.

Try reseating the round, 6-pin connector that passes through the bulkhead first. That can also cause this.

Does the parking brake warning light blink when the handbrake is on?

Turn Signal Switch seem to be a problem on two of my cars, one was High-Low Beam. The second one was the turn signal lights sometimes all didn’t work.

The turn signal switch is totally unrelated to the emergency flasher...so it seems to eliminate that (other than possibly the connectors).

Thank you all for your thoughts. Dreading getting into the garage here in Phoenix metro with temps in the low 100’s. Will check the relay first and then see what is what. Will update when I am able. Again, thank you

Here is the picture of the situation. Which of the relays identified by the magenta arrows is the offending one? Also, the blue arrow points at a mystery black plastic box connected with a small red tube. Ideas on what this may be?

The picture may be too large. I usually resize photos before posting.

so it would not load my screen shot with the arrows. Looking at the photo there are two round relays, the one that is pretty obvious right behind the black wire and another that is behind it. Both seem well seated. There is also a square relay behind the green/yellow and black wire. Looking pretty shabby I know.

Mystery is the black box about 2x3x3 inches that you can see upper center connoted to a small red hose. Ideas what this is?

I am not smart enough of figure how to annotate the pic and get it to upload.

Any comments appreciated

I believe the black box is your fuel expansion tank. One of the round relays is the headlight relay. Not sure about the other unless you have added a fan to your oil cooler. Maybe on a '69, the horn relay is not in the panel like later cars. The square box is most likely your flasher (it really is not a relay).

The flasher relay should be a rectangular block maybe 1x1x2 inches. Have you checked all fuses? The 4-ways use one fuse and the turnsignals use another fuse.
