Door speaker recommendation

Ok audiophiles. Help a brother out. I currently have a set of Focal VS130 5.25" components in my doors and some crappy old kenwoods in the package tray. I am lightening the car but still want some tunes for long trips. The package shelf speakers are going away (unless you persuade me otherwise) and i am thinking I could go to a larger set of front components, like a 6.5" main.

Thoughts? Anybody want some nice 5.25's?

Thanks

i just redid my whole system. i went on ebay and searched for the most expensive car speakers. focals, morel, jl's and a brand ive never heard of.
critical mass- they are a 6.5 coaxial w/a carbon fiber woofer and a massive tweeter. you can get them for around 299 for two. i took a chance and bought a set. they are incredible, really shallow mount and the specs are great. 2" woofer voice coil 1.25" tweeter voice coil. i bought another pair and stuck those in the back. they are worth checking out

critical mass rs6

I would highly recommend MB Quart if you're able to find them in the size that you're looking for.

Both suggestions above are great speakers. I went with Alpine 6.5" separates in the doors and a Focal iBus 2.1 powered sub under the passenger seat that ALSO has a built in 2 Chanel amp for the separates. Absolutely awesome in this car. I also put some 4x6 alpine coaxials in the rear shelf just for fill (it is a targa after all). The rears are powered from the deck and everything is balanced to produce good imagining. I managed to get the stock grills on the back too.

MB Quart got bought out a few years ago, and is not the same quality anymore.

Just go with the 6.5" Focals. These things rock. I removed my rear speakers and sub woofer and just run these Focals. They sound excellent.

I'm happy with my Alpine Type R's. I have them front and rear in my Cab. I need to get a more powerful head unit or an amp to power them though.

These provide a nice flat surface for mounting the larger speakers. A member on this list makes them.

There are also dimensioned drawings of the above boards. I think I made mine from them out of MDF or plywood. See this thread for drawing:

If you're going to really do it and do it once, try to do it right.

I used Infinity Reference 6.5 components. I also sealed the door with dynomat style sealing roll (it was at lowes and really had no smell after install, think I paid $6-7 for a 16ft roll. I bought two and had enough left over to do the entire rear deck area).. This made the biggest difference for the audio quality. I did the inside of the door skin as well to reduce road noise.

I paired the infinities with an amp rated to the max rms the infinities could handle safely. I also made spacers like the ones above out of 1/2inch particle board. It's not hard with a hand held electric band saw.

The only two really painful parts were cutting into the door panel vinyl to locate the hole for the tweeter and having to rewire the window switches. PITA!

I no longer need the rear speakers. The sound is amazing when I want it. For the most part the radio is off as per requests from my son "so he can hear the engine".

I like Infinity Kappa's over Focal's.

Morel's sounded great in a friends 965.

As this post was from a year ago, I suspect LeftCoastErik has found a solution or moved on.

Hi- Looking for the best speakers and tweeters for doors with standard audio. Not looking to do any cutting, tweeter housing mods. Would like to retain OEM look. Will be powered by Classic radio.

Door speaker recommendation

I really like the Infinity series available through Crutchfield
The 6.5" fit nicely in the doors without any modifications or protrusions and allows for the factory grills.

As i remember, I am pretty sure i had to drill new holes for this size speaker.
There is a smaller 5.25" version that would likely not require any drilling .

I used the stock wire connections

Focal with tweeter were 20 minute install in my office parking lot with crimping tool for the harness. I used JBL for the rear deck. I have a Targa, so high fidelity is shredded $$$s. Sounds great driving around town and blasts pretty good. Bass suffers, but I am not a "whoomp, whoomp" kind guy.

You will need some sound deadening. Made a big difference for me

Focals in the door and a sub under the passenger seat. Nice JBL amp drilled onto the passenger wood footwell backside.

Sounds terrific
