leak from spedo sensor cavity?

I've got a 85 915 transaxle with a oil leak that I'm trying to track down. It only leaks when running, so it's above "the water line". It'll put a few drips on the garage floor after a drive and not another drop for a month. I've cleaned it and run it for 30 minutes. Sure enough, it leaking..... but from the speedometer sensor!! Ya, I know, that sensor sits in a blind cavity! Anyone ever heard of a crack in the spedo sensor mount??

As always, Thanks for the help!

That's very odd, from changing my own speedo sensor recently, I too realised its in a blind hole, not sure why there would be crack there, unless someone's been a bit ham fisted getting the old one out at some point.
Let us know what you find.

The question to cover the other possibilities: Did you smell it and verify it's tranny oil and made sure it's not coming from somewhere else? Otherwise, I'm stumped too.

Reach up top and feel for the hole in the breather fitting. It needs to face the front of the car.
You can pop the speedo sensor out to check for a crack. Very thin there.
