Porsche Crest Converting 911 from "long hood" to "short hood"

I've been on and off on this topic and cant seem to get a straight forward answer. And that is, is it possible to convert a long hood 911 into a short hood. Is it a matter of unbolting the long hood parts and bolting on the short hood parts? (front end) or is there any bracketry that has to be welded in place?

NOTE: i do not care about the originality or overall value of the car since i plan to do many more modifications to better suit my agenda.

It's a conversion that is not done with bolt-on parts. You will have a lot of fabrication ahead of you to convert from a "long hood" to a "short hood".

What benefits would this conversion provide that you need?

You need to weld in the front latch panel, and front bumper supports and at the rear you also need the bumper tube mounts if you want to do it right. You also need to weld in the rear reflector panel.

Given the amount of backdates constantly happening, I’d bet you could get all the parts you need (hood, front latch panel, rear reflector panel, front and rear bumpers and valances, bumper crush tubes, crush tube mounting brackets) all for free as most of it ends up as trash.

If you go with fiberglass bumpers you might not need need crush tubes or the brackets- you’d likely have to fabricate your own mounting brackets.

You will have to weld on a lip to the front fenders where you cut the light boxes out otherwise the fender will be flimsy.

Again, you can probably get donor fenders or maybe even better; trade your long hood parts for someone’s short hood parts.

Surely you'd be ahead to sell your long hood and buy a short hood instead of converting?

Must be a thread from the early 80s. What's old is new again I guess.

John,
I currently have a 70 911 roller that was forward dated (probably in the 80s) into a IROC clone and now has been backdated... back into 70-73 RSR-ish clone.......what goes around ....comes around

regards,
al
