1971 911 - where does what tunnel linesgo?
Hi,
Im in the process of installing all lines into the tunnel of my 1971 hotrod. Everything was pulled by previous owner so im in the dark trying to get everything right here, and im new to 911 building. I’ve searched the the forum and there is some good info already, but some info im missing, hence my thread. Is someone able to confirm the factory placement of all cables inside the tunnel? Ill try to sum up my observations on placement of cables inside the tunnel. (Placement described by looking at the tunnel in profil fram rear to front): • 2 x Fuel lines - top left corner inside their own passasge inside the tunnel. • 1 x Clutch cable - feed through its own routing through the tunnel. Cable is free of own routing fram shifter to pedal. Located at centre, bottom of tunnel. • 1 x throttle cable - located centre centre inside tunnel, to be placed in 3 x J-shaped retainers. 3 x plastic bushings go between the J-shaped retainers and the wire itself. 3 x J-shaped retainers located at rear, handbrake and gearlever inspection hole. • 1 x speedo cable - located ? • 1 x through tunnel wire harness - located bottom right side of tunnel? • 1 x brakeline - located ? Is there also a preferred prioritizing list of what cable to start off and what cable to finish with? My fuel lines I only succeded in pulling one fuel line through its location in the tunnel. Looks like to me there is not enough room for pulling two factory porsche lines thourgh the small tunnel inside the tunnel? Also what is this cable routing coming up behind the acccelerator pedal (lhd car) for? What cable suppose to inside that routing? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks, Andy Last edited by AndyLuft; 07-30-2023 at 04:27 AM.. Reason: Adding info |

ROW '78 911 Targa

Cable by accelerator is likely supposed to go to the brake pedal switch for brakes.
2 female spades with black/yellow wires?

![]() I am watching this thread with interest. Perhaps these photos from a fellow Pelican member may help, EXCEPT they are from a later model 911..... ![]() ![]() The Feed line to the Motor runs on the pass side above & to the Rt of the Clutch Cable and the Return line forward to the Tank runs below and to the Drivers side. On a further note about your Tunnel Fuel lines, your 3rd photo down seems to show a late model, 80>89 Factory Tunnel line being installed. Hope you have the matching Green Steel Hardlines as only they have the M14 Female Flare fitting that match this line you are installing. No Metric hose adapters are available for these fittings. I am having some custom made but will be a while before they will be available. Hope you have opened up the holes at each end to allow for the factory grommets..... ![]() If not I can help you with this. Great project you have. Love the color. Is this Viper Green? This is from my 1971 911T, with Zenith carbs. There is no return fuel line. I apologize for not having everything labeled, but that is above my pay grade.

Len I would like to purchase 4 adapter fittings when you get them in.
Here’s another shot if this helps anybody.

and thank you for the comments. Yes its currently painted Viper green, but is originally Conda green. Its interesting to see all the differences and placements on each model year 911 and the lines setup in the rear of the tunnel. Looks like for MY 1971 the feed and return line is located together from the front of the tunnel, through and rear exit. Luckily my end seals were not in so the lines got through without a fight. Well spotted, I do have the 80 SC fuel lines mounted, and I do have the green hardlines for the engine room as well (not yet fitted). I were to install the engine in the car, but when I saw that there was something off about cables and lines exititing the tunnel, I had to dig in deep in the factory manual. So I ended up pulling all the cables to install them all over again. Sadly there is little to non information about where to place alle the different cables within the tunnel itself. I found it not so intuitive, hence the creation of this thread I think I have come close to how its supposed to be, based on feedback from the forum members ![]() I have made what I think is how its supposed to be on MY 1971 911 T. Not sure about earlier or later style cars(?), maybe other might confirm or correct my estimations. My recollection from my 1969
#4 is a solid metal tube for the unsheathed clutch cable, and goes down the left side of the tunnel, and terminates by the pedal cluster clevis. The mechanical speedo comes fully sheathed from the back of the gauge to the transmission, and goes down the right side of the tunnel. I could certainly be wrong for a 71 though. |

Andy, beautiful build…love the viper green and that well presented motor. Definitely concours quality.
I’m also working with Len on the tunnel lines and layout for my ‘71 ST mod so your well presented pics are invaluable. Thanks for starting this thread. Cheers, Johan
