Oil Tank Repair/Replacement? - 73.5T

Well, I plan on dropping my external oil tank this weekend and having it "dipped" so I can inspect for any small pin holes to try and find the source of my small oil leak. All hoses have been checked, the sending unit gasket replaced yet after the engine warms up I will get a silver dollar sized leak on the ground until the oil level comes down....When the engine cools the leak of course stops! I just cannot find the source; howewver, it is coming form the top portion of the tank above the sending unit.

So, if this original copper oil tank which is 34 years old does have internal rust and a samll breakthru, I would think its toast!

My inquiry here is for advise on repair or source of replacement.
Can the tank be internally sealed (POR product) as a last measure, or will that mess it up? Any sources for replacement?
Hunting one down thats just as old in a junk yard may be dealing with the same problem down the road. The 1973.5 tank may be one of a kind. This does seem to put me in a pickle!!!!!

Any help out there?

Thanks
Bob

Since crud from the inside of a deteriorating tank goes directly into your engine without seeing the filter, I would just replace your tank. Mine was replaced on my 73.5T a few years ago with a Stainless Steel tank. I took it out this winter, cleaned it up and sprayed it with clear coat. Looks very nice and it has held up well. The inside was pristine. I will post some pics later.

I think you can buy a new one from our host.

I took mine out several years ago and a local raditor shop was able to clean it out and repair any small holes they found. It's been great every since.

Who has stainless tanks?

Our host indicates that the oil tank not the oil cooler is "NLA". I might have to inquire at the dealer, which means its sitting in a basement all dusty somewhere in Stuttgart like every other ancient part I had to search for. I actually located an original WUR in the original box that was made for the 73.5T!! So if anyone knows a source for a stainless oil tank please raise your hand and come forward to help out a PP buddy!

Thanks
Bob

The tank part is 911 107 006 11 and the same used on the SC model. According to two Porsche dealers in Atlanta, GA this part cannot be found "anywhere in the world". Wow!!!!!

Its like owning a Tucker!!

I wish I could help you find one. According to the records, PO bought it on 8/26/94. The part number "930" is stamped on it.

I was just lucky enough to get it 13 years (and only 20K miles) later.

Here is a pic before I cleaned it up.

Okay....
Did my research...........
Those fittings on the bottom of the tank your picturing are for the SC model oil tank, which will go well with the 73.5T. The 73.5T hose connection fittings are located elsewhere and are different, thereby making the 73.5T oil tank one of a kind. If I had a concours car I wou ld have beeen screwed with a retrofit, but several dismantlers have the tanks for a few hundred bucks, so I feel saved!!!

Hey Bob Seems that I am suffering the same problem but mine does not leak much when running but when I come back to the car after a few hours there is a big puddle on the ground under the tank. I have been told that there is a o ring under the oil filter bracket on the tank and this may be my leak, I should get the tank out tonight and no more then.

Anger....
I was told the same thing! I checked all my hose fittings, replaced my sending unit gasket and yet I get oil coming from somewhere up on the top of the tank. When researching the issue the guys at PartsHeaven(dismantlers in Calif) told me that the gasket at the fitting which holds the oil filter unit, does leak and weeps down. You cannot see that from underneath. It was suggested the oil tank should be cleaned every ten years as sludge and gunk will make the oil hotter and slowly sludge the engine.

Here is what I am going to do if it helps:
. drain the oil
. remove all hoses and wire connections to the sending unit
. remove the oil filter
. remove the two nuts holding the tank to the inner body (engine comp)
. Drop the tank (no need to remove the body quarter panel)
. have the tank "boiled" at a radiator shop (caustic solution soaking - $50)
. No need to seal the inside
. Inspect for pinhole perforations and leaks
. seal and paint
. replaces soft hoses (top - tank to airbox - breather hose)
(bottom - soft suction hose - tank to cooler), new clamps
. replace oil filter gasket unit
. new washer and tank mounting hardware

Back in business!!!

Bob

That looks just like the tank I pulled from my SC and cleaned up. Perhaps post an ad in the classifieds? Someone's bound to have one laying around.

Hey Bob
Thanks for the info, I pulled my tank tonight looks like there are no gaskets behind the oil filter, I had some sludge on the tank drain plug and on the engine drain plug. I guess I will follow the same course of action.
thanks Tom

Hey Brad
The car that I would like to be able to drive is a 73 E 2.4 with cis, My Dad bought it in 79 and I've owned since 90. Soon as I fix the oil tank problem it will be back on the road. We live in Shelbune but my youngest son goes to school in Putny at the Greenwood school. He would love to be picked up in the car someday so maybe we could get together when we are in the area.I am going to try and put the car in the Stowe auto show this year because last year p car were so poorly represented there. No digital pics of the car yet so I can't post any yet.
Thanks
Tom

Nice to meet you Tom. If you make it to Putney, let me know in advance. Love to see your car. Here are a few pics of mine, before I began working on it. It is a 73.5T with CIS.

Took my oil tank to the local porsche shop, they did a leak test and found a small hole next to the support bracket below the sending unit nothing they could fix in house, they had a used one for for $250.00 or could send mine out to be dipped with a life time warrenty same as a gas tank for $ 150.00. I went with the latter. Thanks for the help.
