What is this black stuff on CV?
Picture of a CV from a racing 2-liter 911. Feels like a rubbery substance, but not sure what it is.

Did somebody smear some black RTV on the joint to seal the shields and prevent them from throwing grease?

I think you’re right. Interestingly these never leaked and I found RTV in side the covers. Not sure why so much RTV would be needed on the “body” of the CV though.
