3.2 just died after a ride.

After a good ride today in the Outback I pulled up to my house and car just died!! Has gas , turns over just fine. It’s not getting gas because when I spray some carb cleaner in the intake it starts for a few seconds only. So far I replaced the DmE relay, the fuel pump relay and fuel pump fuse. Still no start. Expensive fuel pump was replaced 5 years ago with very few miles on it. All sensors replaced 6000 miles ago with top end. Car ran great on ride today then just stopped!!! Ideas please. Could a dirty fuel filter cause gas to just stop ??without warning ? Thank you.

Did you fill up the tank on your way home? Are all the relays you replaced new or old ones you had for spares? Newish fuel pump could still fail or maybe a wire on the pump come loose. Can you bypass the FP relay and force the pump to run?

I have a 3.0 so different but just throwing stuff out there. Good luck you will figure it out.

The dme is new, so is the fuel pump relay and fuel pump fuse. So next I must move on to replace the fuel filter and then check the fuel pump. But car ran fine today would either of those just stop working? Just like that??

My car was low on gas but still showed some on the gauge. If I did run out is there a way to prime the fuel pump after adding gas?

If your Carrera is stock there is no fuel pump relay but only one DME relay. So I wonder what exactly you replaced.
DME relay is under driver seat near the ECU. You may try to jump the 3 terminals on the DME relay socket. This should force the FP to run and you should hear it. Then you can try to crank and see if the engine starts.

You are wrong sir. The red relay in my 85 fuse box is the fuel pump relay. It is right in my owners manual diagram. It is also located in the fuse box lid that reads “fuel pump relay”. I went to local parts store yesterday and it came up as fuel pump relay. I replaced both the relay and the DME relay. Also, if you go to pelican parts, they sell it also.

Here is the story, sad but true, I did the test above , there is no fuel pump sound at all. Weird. I bought the best fuel pump a few years ago. I guess that’s next. New dme! Fuel pump relay and fuse. Motor just stopped after a great ride! Bummed!

if you have jumped the fuses and no power to the pump ..it is the pump..sorry..
Just double check the bottom wire on fuse 6 if it not loose...

Ivan

Nick, Carrera pump does not have red relay for the pump only DME relay under the seat and the fuse no.6
The cover could say that but it is most likely from the 930 cover.....it is misleading
yours should have this number 911 612 161 06

Thank you Ivan I replaced those relays anyway, cheap. Also ordered a new fuel filter, good to have anyway. I’m not in great health and I really don’t want to crawl under car to change out pump but!!! I will. Weird that it just died!!! Thanks for your great advice!! Was a wonderful ride yesterday until it stopped!!!

Double check the wire bottom...also you do not have any kill switch tied to the fuel pump..correct?

Nick, if you haven't already, remove, clean and reconnect the connections to the fuel pump. I didn't see if you had done that. Then make sure you have voltage at those connections. Then with power to the pump, whack it with a block of wood or small hammer or such.
