Outer boot (for shifter in tunnel)
Highly technical question here....
It looks like I am missing an outer and inner boot at the rear of the tunnel. Stupid question are these boots worth replacing? Will I have to remove the shift linkage from behind the tunnel ? (pls say no) Looks like the PO removed it fer some reason ![]() I am hoping to effectively stop the cold air that is wooshing in the cab from the E-brake boot. Targa actually likes the cold, but I'd rather not have it blowing on my shifting hand. Thanks! no boot ![]()

Oops - I posted the incorrect part. I need the "sealing sleeve", and there is no inner boot. Item 20 on the right.

yes, I think they are worth it if you drive on the street.
of course, there are people who don't even seal the top strut mounts b/c it doesn't look as pretty, so maybe I (and the engineers at Porsche who designed the cars) are off base |

i use a soft closed cell foam ..just cut a proper sized piece and wrap around the shifter rod and stuff to in the opening. works fine for me. dont usually drive the car in wet weather but it keeps it dry if i do and no cold air! too bad CV joints arrent that easy to enclose!

Dont you get a lot of road dust on the shift linkage and in the tunnel without it? It looks like it would be a easy repair.

The shift linkage beyond the tunnel is a piece of cake to remove. There's a shoulder bolt in the alloy coupler that you remove and voila', you can install your missing boot. No readjustment of the shifter is necessary, as the bolt can only fall into one position because there's a machined hole in the trans. shift shaft that the bolt threads into.
I'd put that boot on there. Keeps crud out of the tunnel. My racecar was missing the boot for my 915 trans and there was all kinds of debris in the tunnel (as well as some gear oil on account of a leaky shift shaft seal). Your G50 is slightly different and gear oil spillage is less likely due to the shaft seal and coupler design. But the debris issue still applies. Also note that you have a big o-ring flopping around on your shift shaft. It's a makeshift repair prompted by a Porsche parts reference manual tech tip from the 74-89 book, which is probably a shortened version of a formally issued factory tech bulletin: On 1987-88 model 911's which have a rattle noise coming from teh shift rod, the installation of a rubber o-ring on the shift rod may help eliminate the noise. Install as follows: 1. Remove shift rod access plate 2. With shift lever in neutral, disconnect from shift rod from coupling. 3. Move shift lever in 3rd gear position and slide rubber o-ring (p/n 999 701 969 40) over front shift rod 4. Reconnect shift coupling 5. With shift lever in neutral, slightly tension the rubber ring with a nylon tie strap to the left side hand brake cable guide tube. The distance from the shift rod flange to the o-ring should be approx. 100mm. 6. Reinstall access plate. Road test car. If rattle noise is still audible, increase tension on the rubber o-ring slightly Pretty cheesy, eh? No need to buy the Porsche o-ring if anybody wants to do this quick fix. Any large o-ring from the hardware store will do.

I live pretty close to you(relatively). If you would like, we can install your boot in my heated garage. I have dropped my engine a lot, so I know exactly what Kevin is describing above. It will take about a half hour to forty-five minutes to install.

lin7310948 I'd considered the foam idea, but now think I'll opt for the part since it sounds like it is worth it. Yeah, she & I are just street (RWebb). Targa Time - I wondered the same thing - didn't seem too bad in there, but I really didn't notice the air flow (and linked the dirt suction factor) until I started driving her this winter. Kevin - the pic (with O ring is from 2 yrs ago when I was doing the front shift bushings and decided to inspect under the rear door. The ring had me stymied as to it's purpose - cheesy is right (chuckle). I really don't recall offhand if I removed it or not at the time. Chris - thanks very much for your gracious offer. I'm in Maple Glen (Horsham twp) and work at LM in VF/KoP. (closer to you). Mind if I ping/PM you after the holidays/place the order? Thanks all

Mine was missing too (many mechanics toss it I've heard). Easy to replace, I didn't notice any noise difference but seems like a good I idea to seal out the elements. 1 bolt, $35 or so.

AH Ha That's how the air is getting into the front compartment and through the dash? I've tried to adjust hood. I thought it was a leak through the A/C condenser fan. Now I know. Sorry for the thread hijack.

Does anyone know exactly how far in/out the rubber sleeve/boot needs to be? I'm thinking it should just be inside the opening to the engine bay. Is it supposed to be pulled over the area in the engine bay that has the bolt?
