Lead is absolutely fabulous for engines, but it is literal poison for everyone exposed to your exhaust. Everything in the world is now contaminated with lead because of the use of leaded fuel. Avgas still has it to a very small degree but to my knowledge they're trying to eliminate it completely--turns out kids growing up next to small airports have elevated blood lead levels.
