Nor Cal air cooled shops?

Hey everyone, just checking who people like to bring their air cooled cars to to get work done. Appreciate any tips on shops that do specific things really well, for example- i'm looking at redoing the suspension on my 3.2. And yes, I have already talked to Chuck at Elephant (Santa Clara), and they're definitely high on the list!

But also looking for shops in general who do great work. From minor things like valve adjustments to complete engine rebuilds to full on restoration work and outlaws.

I'll start- my go to has been Junipero Serra Porsche in Daly City. Jimmy and his crew have worked on all my cars for many years, and they do great work. They specialize more in OEM and maintenance, but can do stock spec rebuilds. They are great at both air and water cooled Porsches.

What shop do you go to?

What do you define as "NorCal" - your references seem to indicate just Bay Area?

If you are going further East - Hollerans's Performance in Auburn is an Air Cooled specialist for 30+ years.

IPB in Sacramento is highly rated as well...

I have known Bill Eason of Eason Autoworks for years. He knows air cooled Porsches like very few others. I have a 2.8 911 hotrod that he maintains for me. 3423 Harlan St., Emeryville. (510) 420-1262.

I'm in the Bay Area so those are preferred, but I'd be willing to travel within Northern California. A friend of mine also uses Bill Eason. Will definitely look him up.

RMG in Sunnyvale. Further south in Campbell is BTM Motorwerks, and even further south is a branch in Morgan Hill called BTM Motorsports (full disclosure BTM sponsors PCA LPR autocross).

I've not had direct experience with the other folks but have heard good things about Modderman in Mountain View, and S Car Go in San Rafael (advertises in Panorama).

I've also used RMG for the last 11 years. They're great on air cooled. I used Jerry Woods for my alignment and corner balancing.

Don Wise at Don's Autowerks, 1320 Dell Ave, Campbell. Good guy, very knowledgeable team. He's worked on my cars over the past 20 years - 356's thru current water cooled 911's.

RMG in Sunnyvale

Funny story: I went to look at a garage find in the East Bay. An older gentlemen owned 2 air-cooled cars, but hadn't driven them in over a dozen years. I took a picture of one of the engine compartments and sent it to Dan at RMG. He recognized the handwriting on the oil filter as his own. He remembered the owner, but no longer had any service records stored in the office on the cars, as it had been so many years.

There's Hi-Tec Automotive in San Rafael.
They replaced my clutch and some other items a few years ago, I was happy with their service.

I will add another vote for John Holleran in Auburn. His motors, transaxles, etc., are works of art. He is a real master and just looking in his engine assembly room will fill you with warm, fuzzy thoughts for your car. He is busy and of course, $$$.

+1 for Hi-Tec Automotive in San Rafael. Been my shop for over 15 years for my 1974 Carrera and 2003 Turbo...as well as my past Cayenne and Boxster. Brad (service manager) and Deven (owner, mechanic, and air-cooled guru) are always honest and fair. They recommend only the work that needs to be done and they do it right. Plus, they're just great guys.

Bill Eason hands down. Busy at times but worth the wait.
