Is my torsion bar dead or okay?

Pretty quick question which I think I might know the answer to already from some quick searches on here but its always nice to get confirmation from a second hand source

In the process of tearing down and rebuilding the front and rear suspension and the front torsion bars were a bit stuck in the control arm. When I finally got them out, I noticed that there was a small blemish in the coating - probably scoring from the TB hitting the inside of the CA, I assume.

I feel like they are going to need to be replaced but wondering if its a slight overreaction, but let me know your thoughts!

Some clean up and rust prevention and a good coating with decent paint will be fine. The bar is still OK. You just want to stop any corrosion. I have had one like that (2nd hand replacement) in my SC for over 20 yrs.
My 2c.

Since you've got them out I'd buy drilled ones. Probably similar cost to getting them cerrakoted or whatever.

Think I would try to clean them up with a wire wheel to remove the surface corrosion and loose paint. Then I’d paint them (but not the splines) and coat them well all over with axle grease to prevent any future corrosion and install. My $0.02.

Just sandblast the corroded areas and repaint them. Even better would be shot peening. The blasting puts the surface in compression, which helps prevent stress cracks from forming. DO NOT use a rust remover, rust reformer, etc. Those contain phosphoric acid, which can cause hyrogen embrittlement of the surface and cause cracks to form.

Amazing thank you for everyone's suggestions and 2c. Looks like I'll be going the route of blasting or removing the corroded areas and painting them. No rust remover or reformer.

There is a rust prevent treatment that does not etch. I am at the bottom of the world - so the products available may well be different - but i am sure you would have an equivalent. Ours is a CRC product - milky white. It bonds with the rust and forms an organic coating over the area. Which can then be painted. No acid treatment involved.

I'd clean that area of missing powder coat, then paint on some epoxy primer. You could then paint over with black if you wish. Just remember to coat the bars in grease when they go back in.

Alan, I've seen that CRC milky stuff. I believe it contains phosphoric acid, so be sure to check the label before using it on springs.

As others have said, just clean up the area, put some rust preventer on it, nothing to worry about.
Ant.
