Help identify this door/window part?
Hi all,
In preparation of adjusting the window frame on my '84 coupe, I was pulling the driver's door card off. As I was pulling the plastic sheet off (right around the circled area, below), this part dropped onto the ground. I don't know if it was stuck to the plastic, or where it came from. I haven't consulted the PET yet, but was hoping someone might be able to ID it. Just found this pic of the replacement/repair part on left, and original pivot on right. That explains why they don't look the same.

Turns out it was a piece of cake compared to inserting it back into the door, and getting it bolted to the motor - Arrrghhhhh!!! During the removal of the screws that hold the motor to the regulator, I inadvertently removed the screw (close by) that holds the stop bracket onto the assembly. When I went to put it back on, I noticed the part it bolts to was bent. Not sure how this could happen - seems like that would take a HUGE amount of pressure to bend it. My passenger window is slow on my Targa. I need to take a look at it and see if the spring post is missing. Then take a look at the motor.

I found one of these in both my ‘72 911T 40 years ago, and more recently in my ‘83 911SC. The ‘72’s didn’t want to roll up easily, it rolled up ok. When I restored the car, total tear down, I used one of these repair parts. When I found the broken piece in my ‘83, I figured since the window rolled up ok (electric) that it was from a prior repair. Now I need to bore investigate.

The 1/2" and 3/4" references are about the length of the bolts and barrel nuts.
Pictured are 1/2" bolt and 3/4" barrel nut (length). In final form, I think I cut 1/8" or 3/16" off the barrel nut to shorten it little. Not necessary, but felt better. |
What is the size of the threaded portion? 1/4”

Edited for better clarification:
The carriage bolt is a 1/4"-20 x 1/2" long - That's 1/4" diameter. 20 thread-per-inch 1/2" in length. That's how it's referenced if you go to HW store. The barrel nut is 1/4"-20 x 3/4" long - Again 1/4"-20 to match the bolt, and 3/4" in length That's what I had on hand, and it worked well. You could use 3/4" long bolt and nut if you wanted to. There is enough room. Likewise, you could use 1/2" long bolt and nut. There's enough for the spring to catch onto. But, doesn't feel as secure to me. |

BTW, I understand the Rennline repair part people speak of, and that Pelican sells, is for the central pivot of the spring. The very middle axis of it.
It is not for the outer spring catch that everyone finds broken off. I don't know of a commercially available repair for what we've been discussing. |
I bought the coupling and carriage bolt, but after looking at the pictures online, the square part of my carriage bolt is too thick. I need to find one that matches the bolt online so it doesn’t bottom out. Also, I will need to cut the coupling down.

Interesting how thick that square carriage retainer area is.
Another option is to add a washer. There is enough room between the spring and regulator. Might have to file the corners down where it protrudes too tall. I thought about a washer just to increase the contact area at that point. When I cut and shortened my coupler (barrel nut), I installed it so the flat cut-off side was toward the regulator, for that reason. (The coupler itself is rounded a bit.) |
I filed a carriage bolt down so it would fit in the slot on the regulator. Started to file the square part down, then realized a regular screw would work. Here's what I ended up using:
