Might be on a bit tight...

Fan nut after my fifth attempt at removal. Not sure how the PO got it this tight but starting to deform the nut. I might just cut it off...
Additional ideas welcome. Someone suggested an impact but the body prevents a straight shot at it and I would think that I would have to cut the belt to prevent any backwards rotation.

Use a impact universal if you can’t get a direct line to it I’ve always used a impact on mine

I wouldn't heat the nut with a standard mapp torch, but an oxy-mapp set-up has an ultra hot micro flame that would heat it enough to turn off easily.

You need a spanner wrench to hold the pulley it goes in those little holes. And a socket that fits

Did that on the first try, it started to bend the spanner.

I can try that. Do I need to remove the belt? I'm just worried about the counterotation.

Nope - keep the belt on. It's how we do every one at the shop. Super easy and safe.

Scratching my head too about how a well fitting 6 point socket messes up the nut like that ?

Then stand to the right and push hard with a straight arm.

I'll juice it up again and try the impact and then the method with the spanner against the engine if that doesn't work.
Thanks guys, I appreciate the help and the patience.

I have tried sockets, extentions, the spanner, cheater bars, heat and a crows foot with a long extention. Most recently the allen with a crows foot on the nut.

Fire.

there's a chance someone put blue loctite on the shaft.

Again, I probably wouldn't use a standard mapp torch head, even at low flow, but an oxy-mapp will safely have the nut off easily in minutes.

great excuse to buy a new tool. very handy for lots of things.

OK, I'm guessing it was the crowfoot slipping off making those impressions.

Nuts are cheap ... I would dremel or equivalent.

This one's a goner in any case.

Hi
Option one:
Follow John Walkers excellent photos.
Option two:
Drill thru the nut parallel to the alternator axis.
Open the hole with larger drill bits until it opens out the outer flat surface of the nut.
Split the nut with a cold chisel.
Undo nut.
Buy new nut and shim(s).
(Position hole so that nut and alternator threads are not drilled at final hole size.)
Cheers

Yeah agreed on all counts. I have a mapp torch, I will give it a shot.
I like John Ws method but just nervous about snapping the toolkit spanner with the forth this thing has been put on with...

If you don't want to spring for the oxy-mapp, get one of these so you can control the size of the flame better. The key is just getting the nut hot, not the shaft and alternator itself.
