New (to me) 74 US Spec Carrera

I'm new, here, but not completely new to Porsches. I wish I had a forum like this when I bought my first one back in 1990...

I just picked up a US Spec 74 Carrera. It seems solid, though I haven't crawled all over it yet. I have seen a few little gremlins, but nothing major, yet. I was wondering if someone could help with the few little things I've found.

There is a crack in the dash, but I think I saw how to replace that in the 101 Projects for your 911 Book. Any other tips on replacing the dash?

The dash lights seem awfully dim... Simply replace bulbs, or is there something else I should be looking for?

The clock isn't working... How hard is it to fix this?

and finally (for today) I noticed that there doesn't seem to be a lot of "spring tension" centering the gear shift between third and fourth gears. This could (has) lead to a few missed shifts/grinding and gear hunting. Is this something I can fix with a shift kit, or is it more internal?

Thanks for any help!

I recently replaced the dash on my 74 coupe. First of all the windshield has to be out. Secondly, those suckers are expensive...$900.00 or so new and very hard to come by used.

I think the trans problem is probably more internal. Clock, take it out and replace or send it somewhere for repair ...someone will chime in with a place.

74 carreras are great cars. My own 74 is dressed like a carrera w/o the stripes and an engine about 100 more h.p.

Check your shifter bushings under the shift lever itself. When I bought my car I couldn't even put my car into 5th gear the bushings were so bad. It did wonders for the lever and are very easy/cheap to replace. Check that first before you dig deep into your wallet for something more major.

My understanding is that there is no spring centering the shifter between 3rd and 4th. That is what the Siene shift gate kit is supposed to do that the factory didn't.
