Do you polish your own nuts?

Now that I have your attention, has anyone tried stripping black alloy lug nuts and polishing them out. I know Al can do it, but I'd prefer to try it myself. Does anyone know the process?
Thanks,
Mark

Wire wheel and polishing wheel with rouge. Or you can simply BUY them that way.

The process is the same as polishing fuchs --remove tne anodize, and polish. Though, the anodize doesnt seem as thick/deep on the lugs.

I do have a set of polished lugs from when my fuchs where polished.
Remember:

If you would want to try these, I have them for ya. . . . but I don't think you'll like the look.

Glenn,
That is an amazing picture. I' would like to try them on for size before I get in to the process. Just finished a strip and polish of a set on 7'/9's and want to see how I like the polished nuts. I should be in Redmond around 9/8 so we can catch up!!

I bead blasted a chewed up, older, original set of OEMs and then hit the ends with a buffer in the shop. Total time involved was 30 minutes. Saved a few dollars and they look fine on the Fikse wheels. I would have had to spend another 30 minutes for my anal eye to accept them on a set of polished Fuchs.

I sent an extra one to my anodizer (it was free, and I'm lazy ) a few years ago and he couldn't get the black off. This suprised me because we have stuff stripped and re-anodized all the time, and it turns out great. My anodizer is also the one who does the stripping and anodizing for Weidmans Wheels (they're neighbors), so he is certainly familiar with Fuchs wheels. He suggested that mine might have been powdercoated at some time in the past.

I spent a few minutes on a buffing/stripping wheel trying to get the black off, but gave up after making little progress. I think I'll just buy new ones when I have my wheels refinished.

To everyone that has done this before, does the process make give them a "highly polished" look or can it be done gradually to obtain the desired look? My rims aren't polished to a high gloss so I really only want to get the nuts polished enough to match the rims.

rdane, what is that black think sticking out past your bumper?

A fine grain bead blast (I am using 6/800 grit glass beads) gives a good look and takes off anodizing or powder coat fairly quickly @ 125 psi.

Oh, you mean this? It's called a wing and needed to drive fast. '78s haven't the need

Small problem...when ya twist your polished nutz off or on, you needs to be careful. They scratch easily and the mirror polish will need to be renewed....for those that have hand polished their own nutz, this generates heat and can burn your hands.

BTDT, I wear mittons...but it lacks in sensitivity....

I prefer not to speak of my nuts in such a public forum if you don't mind but here is a slight tweak of Island's fab shot.
