Import Duty on Car Parts

If I buy new car parts from abroad (EU) and have them shipped to the USA, should I expect to be charged import duty? If so, is there a way to estimate the percentage? Thanks.

If you do get stung for import duty, how does it work - does the courier send you a bill that you need to pay before it's delivered? Or is the package delivered regardless and you get a bill from the powers-that-be?

Depends on the carrier. Fed ex bills me. Dhl holds the parts until the duty is paid. But there will be duty due.

You can get a refund of VAT if that is not already taken out of your price. I think all of Europe is 17.5%?

Thanks all. I already bought it VAT-free: that was one of the incentives (in addition to the fact that it's a part not available in the US). It left Europe with DHL and is now passed onto USPS for local delivery.

You may get lucky with USPS. They have been hit-and-miss with regards to collecting duty for items I have purchased.

UPS sends you a bill after the fact. REALLY pisses me off, we don't send THEM any bills!
