I bought wide body fender flares for my 78 sc. The rear ones are carbon fiber and fit just fine. The front ones are glass and they fit the fender well. The problem is that the wheel opening for the front turbo flare is alot bigger than the factory SC wheel opening. It looks like the fender flares are stretched front to back. Does anyone have any experience with these conversions?
Should they be this big or do I have a bad set? I hate to cut that much out of a good fender. I have some pictures you guys can look at. I have 16's on the car Last edited by kmhemi; 11-10-2004 at 11:24 PM.. |

The opening is bigger because Porsche put spacers on the front wheels with the Turbos, which means the wheels don't simply rotate, they actually swing along an arc -- which needs more room than if the center of rotation was right near the center of the wheel.
If that doesn't make sense, imagine holding a bicycle wheel with your hand. If you pivot it by moving your wrist, it rotates on a single point, pretty much. But if you use your shoulder to turn it, it needs a much wider arc. In the case of your shoulder turning, you're effectively creating an arms-length spacer. Even simply widening the wheels on stock hubs with no spacer will require more room when the wheels turn. This isn't the case in the back, where nothing has to turn, so the rear flares can have the same opening size.

In your first photo "Here is the first one" it almost looks like you have a rear drivers side flare instead of a front passanger side flare? Could this be possible??
Also I have received some fiberglass flares that were pulled from the mold too soon and packed flat and they flattened out. It meant mounting the rear of the flare then pulling the front of the flare back to tighten up the wheel opening.

the front are rears are entirely different. They are also etched into the material right front or left front. So we all agree that there is a problem.

I had a wanted ad posted in the parts area. A member replied so I bought them. The back ones are great. I am NOT going to do anything up front until I locate a different set of fender flares. These can't be right. As I said earlier, they are etched from the mold as to where they are suppose to go on the car.
