CIS mystery solved
For several months I was experiencing what appeared to be intermittent fuel starvation upon startup. Couldn't solve the problem and then last week the engine stopped completely as I was leaving an early morning meeting. I sat in the car for several minutes trying to determine whether to have the car towed.
As a last ditch effort, I opened the engine lid and took off the air cleaner and Voila! there was the problem! When the car had backfired it blew the "pop-off" valve completely out of it's opening. I placed the "pop-off" valve back into the hole and the engine immediately fired up. On the way to the office I stopped by a hardware store and picked up some epoxy. Epoxied the pop-off valve back in. That was two weeks ago and I have since had no problems with startups. Who would have thought? The mysteries of CIS. Guy Chiatello 82 SC Black Coupe |

That happened to me, too, some years ago. Since then I have carried an expandable rubber "freeze out plug" of the right diameter in the tool bag, thus assuring that I will never need it.

as long as they don't get backfired out, you'll make it home.

You should look into why the backfire occurred in the first place.

hell, they backfire any time they feel like it, even if perfectly tuned. usually it's because the cold running is too lean.

Your cold control pressure or your mixture could be off.
