Exhaust system on my 85 Carrera

Here is the exhaust system on my 85 911. I believe it has SSI headers. Please can anyone tell me what this exhaust might be, it is aftermarket and something I acquired with the car.

1.) The muffler shows two entries...so it's a "two-in/ one out" muffler. The upstream headers can be SSI, but the mottled look of the pic makes me think it's the similar looking pre-74 stock set up that isn't quite so shiny as the stainless SSI's.
2.) Engine is clean..but be prepared....it's not any cleaner than my 85 and most other posters on this board..... Wanna talk fanatic?....you should see some of the engine bays posted here...

Yes you have SSI's the muffler also looks to be stainless steel with a modification to make it a 2-out muffler. On the drivers side it looks like the inlet for the heat to run through the SSI is either blocked off or what?????

Hey I thought my bay was clean! Maybe the pic doesnt do it justice, it sparkles to me.

Please can someone tell a newbie like me what a heat exchanger does and why a SSI is a good thing to have? Why/how does it improve over the stock setup?

Also, I read somewhere with a SSI fitted the incar heating can be affected? Mine seems to work ok.

Richard.

It does indeed sparkle....just preparing you for the extreme fanatacism of this board...

The heat exchanger is a trapped volume that is built over and around the exhaust. It provides a source of cabin heat for our (not-water-cooled) cars..think "heater core" ....

SSI's provides separate, fairly equal length tubes to scavange exhaust for each cylinder. Other factory systems are less-equal in length or collect gasses in more of a "common collector" vs having an individual tube for each cylinder. When "common", the exhaust pulse of one cylinder can interfere with the ease of exhausting the neighboring cylinder's gas.....less efficient and therefore robs some available HP.

Basically....
