I'm putting my guess in that this is an early 70's car that some one did a pan replacement with the current VIN stamp. Couldn't he just measure the wheels base?

Sure, but you can covert SWB to LWB, so that won't really tell much. Also, that VIN area is not generally replaced with pans or due to rust problems. And if it was replaced, what happend to the original VIN. It should be on the front bulkhead and probably in the door. I'm starting to feel like this was a theft at one time. Nothing else seems to make sense yet.

Could be a one -of - a- kind made by Porsche for body type testing purposes and not only extremely rare, but extremely valuable. In fact, you may be contacted directly to get this acr back for their museum.

Sorry...

David Riley gave a very good rundown: here's what I would add to his list:

Headlights: LWB sugar scoops
Targa bar: LWB louvers
Ventilation system: LWB dual defrost boxes and blower
Trigger style door handles: 70+
Black engine grill with recess for "2.4" logo- 72+
Steering wheel: LWB

We've had Grandpa hammer in the family for 150 years - only replaced the head twice and the handle three times.

My bet is the front half and the back half of this car didn't meet at the factory. As for the other parts...the dash, door handles, rear glass (as opposed to soft window) could have changed over time and bit by bit.

But if it's got a title, and your state doesn't require an extensive visual inspection, who cares what it started as. Make it what you want it to be.

the emissions layout can provide clues...

what is your shift pattern? i.e. where is 1st gear?

people on Early 911S registry bbs will know more info also.

>Headlights: LWB sugar scoop

The '68s had the DOT sugar scoop headlights too. Can anyone tell if that horn grille opening is from a SWB or LWB? Looks to me like a LWB as well. The ONLY thing about this car that isn't LWB is the VIN!!!

OK, Nemesis, did you remove the knee bar (the lower part of the dash) and look for the VIN underneath just to the right of the glove box door? It will be printed on the underside so you have to crane your head upside down. Perhaps there was some misunderstanding there...

Picts or mpeg of the "crane" process please. I'm assuming it is not the same as the "karate kid" crane.

actually, I did the less elegant and more dirty version of the crane which involves laying on the floorboard with a flashlight

Okay, I should've checked this earlier, but upon closer inspection of the plate in the front trunk (near the smuggler's box) it is welded on. The old peice was cut out. I could only tell from underneath they did a good job of welding on top.

You are absolutely right, I checked with Dr. Johnson to be sure. What threw me was the fact that the early scoops were chrome, these look more like the ones off an SC, but they might have been painted.

Yay! Mystery solved. It really was a chop shop job! Judging by the dash, guages and warning lights, and lack of an oil filler flap, you have a '73 911 Targa. If only the car could tell its own story...I bet it's led an interesting life.

I thought that didn't look right. When's the last time you saw a German anything with the serial # stamped at an angle?

I'd say a 73, also.

Look at it on the good side! The owner now knows what year it is to order parts, and being titled as a 1966, he avoids smog checks in most states!

Great job Jens! Is there ANY mystery that a Pelican can't solve? This board is simply amazing.

It would be cool to run a history of the 911 VIN number (do you know what state is came from?) to see if the theft was ever recovered, or if it went through life as a hot car.

BTW...this car is now listed in the For Sale Forum.
