Help with Headers - GHL Muffler
I'm just about ready to chunck my whole GHL header / 2in/2out exhaust system for my '88 3.2 Carrera since the mufflers cannot seem to take the heat, vibration and pressure.
I've been thru 3 mufflers in 12 months, and even though GHL has been good enough to send me free replacements, I need to find another solution that works. My last muffler lasted two days. Not wanting to give up on the headers, but there does not seem to be any other muffler out there that fits the GHL headers. So, my options seem to be: 1. Have a custom muffler made of stronger stainless. 2. Use racing "traps", but this is also my street car! 3. Re-install my original heat exchangers and muffler. Any thoughts, suggestions, or advice?

Strange. I don't have the headers, but have a GHL muffler which sounds great and I have had no problems whatsoever. What is happening to them?

GHL and SSI's are pretty standard spacing - so you could go with a dual in dansk or a dual in from Ben - MK muffler.

What I have observed on the GHL muffler, which is a small 4x9 oval type, is that first the stainless bands break, then the end seams start to open up, then air gets in and, if racing, backfiring starts to happen. Then the end seams on both sides really start to unravel, affecting the butt seam across the face.
When I spoke to GHL last year about this, they said try tightening the bands a little looser. But that did not help. Either the mounting bands are on firm and break, or if more loosely installed they just fall off.

Nope- none of the above mentioned dual-in mufflers (Borla, Danske, etc. will fit a GHL header. The problem is not the inlet spacing, it's the fact that the muffler sits 3" offcenter to the centerline of the engine for the late Carreras. Which means any other brand muffler hits the right-hand bracket for the bumper.
