And no one's asked about your golf score? Glad you and the car are OK.

My father-in-law swears that those little plastic deer whistles mounted on his bumper really work. I say no way, just another scam.
I asked him if they work why does he need two of them?

Whaddaya think, are they bogus or real? I don't want a whistle on the front of my 911 but I don't want a deer there either.

I'm surprised we haven't heard of a shootout of rival gangs up there like we had in a park here in LB last year at car show. Nice show, eh? Well, it was lowriders, so wha'd they expect? A May Pole dance?

I know this is completely OT, I just wanted my say about the shooting thing. And, Chris, I was just trying to tease a good guy and it backfired on me. Don't take me seriously. Hell, I don't even take me serioulsy.

1. He already said he was ok.

2. Deer never evolved the behavioral responses to deal with high speed autos... As to exactly what physiological or behavioral events are involved - dunno. At a guess, they are trying to figure out what is going on. esp. at night -- it is very disorienting to have bright lights played in your eyes - we used to net sage grouse that way when I was a biology professor. Small birds have evolved to evade a 200 mph dive-bombing Peregrine falcon (those are radar gun data BTW).

3. baby male deer = fawn too

4. "The deer would go into shock and not know a thing as it dies." This is true, but only once it is severe shock. I think it is highly likely that deer feel pain )even tho it has never been proven they evince every response of pain that we do - it's been debated. My usual response to the other side is what criteria they will use to prove that pain is felt in another human. After they answer I pretend not to speak his language and act like I am about to cause him severe pain... usually ends the debate.) Yes - being eviscerated while still alive by a cougar is no fun either. But if you can reduce the pain to a creature, where you caused that pain, I think you should.

I understand the install requires two whistles spaced a specific distance apart to work effectively. The spacing provides a resonance that apparently gets a deer moving away from it ASAP.

I have heard the deer whistles do indeed work. I have personally not ever seen a car with deer strike damage which had those installed, but I don't repair car bodies for a living. When I bought my car, I thought the headlamp washers protruding from the bumper were some sort of German deer whistles. I have been tempted to replace them with the deer whistles anyway.

If you California guys are short on deer, we can send you some.

Steve,

Golf score was lousy but somehow I won $50. Musta been all the free beer. I needed something to steady my nerves. This was AFTER the deer encounter. I did sober up before driving the P-car home that night. The deer was not there when we passed the scene of the crime.

I think we WERE pretty lucky. Also, if I had been driving a Cavalier we would have hit that deer a lot harder. Good brakes are a good thing.

My wife's deer whistles were crushed mercilously by a deer's head at 70mph. $2500 damage to the Sabb 900. She didn't have the whistles on her Audi 90 and the deer acted about the same to the tune of $6000 (and that car was never the same). She drives more than me during the dangerous hours of the day.

Ohio is near the top in deer hits due to overpopulation. No natural predators and no way for normal hunting in metropolitan areas leaves the job up to us "vehicular homiciders".

Ok, I just changed my opinion of deer whistles. I'll keep the German ones on there.

Aren't you glad it wasn't an elk or a moose? i saw some of them last week at jellystone, I figure a moose would make one heck of a mess out of a 911.

msterling,
I live pretty close by in Green. A lot of deer here as well. A few years ago a bunch of us from Prestwick CC were taking a limo/van up to Cleveland Hopkins for a flight to a golf venue. We were northbound on Interstate 77 just before Miller Rd. exit (Next to Highlander golf), the traffic slowed to nearly a standstill and there was some guy in his pickemup truck in the median of this 4 lane highway field dressing a deer someone had just hit minutes earlier. He got cited by the State troopers for something, don't remember what now though.

the idea behind 2 of them is that they hetrodyne like a radio -- "generate new freqs. in sympathy" -- I have no idea if these things work nor have I ever seen a test in the scientific literature...

I'm seeing a major score for you here. Call the folks at Zymol (or whatever high dollar brand of wax you want to promote) and tell them that the body of the car was sooo slick that the deer just slid right off instead of doing damage. You might end up in a big ad in Panorama and a royalty check for years to come!

I was just reading the "fastest you've ever been in a car" thread and remembered this incident:

I was at a sales meeting in the cornfields of central Illinois and had taken my 94 Mustang GT convertible. One morning I was driving with an associate to the meeting from the motel down this dead straight, smooth 2-lane between fields of tall corn. He said "How fast is this thing?". I said something like 150+ and jumped on it. At about 130 I shifted to 5th which was a mistake but it crawled up to about 140. I then slowed back down to sixty. Not five seconds later a couple of deer trotted across the road maybe 300ft in front of us! WHEWEEE! We would have been vaporized along with the deer at 140mph.

Kinda makes you think.
