Handbrake cable replacement

Three months ago I broke one of my handbrake cables while doing a complete suspension overhaul.

No problem, I'll just install new ones, just to be safe for another 20 or so years.

Well it's not *that* hard a job... but for some reason I can not get the new cable housing to fit over the tube that comes out of the center tunnel.

I've installed the whole handbrake and thought the ends of the cable housing would slide over the tubes as soon as I pulled on the handbrake. That didn't work, so I'll just tighten the nuts a bit more and it'll slide right over. Wrong again!

Anybody has any tips how to get these housing ends to fit over the center tunnel tubes?

For now I will park it like this; as I have no time the next two weekends. I can't believe I spent 10 hours on replacing something this simple.... and worse... I broke the heater cable while I was at it.... if it wasn't for the darn cables.

Thanks in advance

Did you order this cable from our host? I did and had the same problem. Damn thing just would not fit on there, and the access is so horrible you can barely get one finger in there.

My old one wasn't broken though, just stiff, so I WD40'd the crap out of it and managed to reuse it. The new one is still sitting in my garage in a forlorn heap. I'd go back to your supplier and explain the situation...

Darn... that was the answer I was hoping not to get

That is something I'd like to avoid, I've completely installed the set, so trying to return it will probably not work (was a german supplier with a decent reputation) and result in a wasted $40 or put them on e-bay.

The handbrake functions fine BTW, but will trap more dust and dirt as it is not a completely closed system.

Anybody else with ideas?

ianc, thanks for the tip, I'll get my old cables out of the trashcan tomorrow... just in case I can't get it to work correctly with the new ones.
