Synchro ring replacement

I have had my '88 Carrera a few weeks now and so far I have replaced some leaky seals, ordered new bushings for the suspension, and ordered parts for the front brakes and suspension.

When the car is cold it is a bit more difficult to shift and it kinda "crunches" into first and second gear (170k miles). I usually double clutch for the first few minutes until things get warmed up a bit and then it isn't much of an issue.

Is this a sign that it needs new synchros? If so, how difficult is it to replace them (1st & 2nd gear)? I have some mechanical ability and I have rebuilt engines in the past but I really don't know anything about transmissions.

Thanks,
Bob

Bob, what you are describing is VERY typical of G50 Carrera's. If it were me, I'd continue to do as you are (i.e. take it easy on the first few shifts until she warms up), and not worry about synchros unless other symptoms develop later on. A tranny fluid refresh is an excellent idea, but don't use Swepco in yours....the G50s prefer synthetic (i.e. Mobil 1, Redline, etc.) unlike the older tranny's which like Swepco better. Hope this helps...and welcome!

edited: ps: the link referenced above is for 915s (not G50s).
