993 years

I have my 87 Targa for sale and getting ready to look for a 993.
I have tired of shifting (gasp) and want only a Tiptronic, and probably only a cab.
Is there any reason to buy one year over another? OBD I/vs OBD II?
What are the differences between the 95 and the 98's

From what I've read, the real difference in Tiptronics came in 2002 when the regular 996 used the upgraded Tiptronic first used in the 2001 Turbo.

I don't know offhand whether 993s saw any improvements in the Tips. My recollection is that 993s are pretty much the same car from 96 through 98. I seem to recall some improvement in 96 that makes the 96 and later models more desirable that the 95.

If you look at Cars.com, you will see 95s much cheaper and 96-98s bunched at about the same price.

'95: OBD-I, and no Varioram (so 12 less HP). Discernable by third brake light hoop.
'96-'98: OBD-II (with the attendant smog check problems for some states), and 12 more HP through Varioram. Later models also came in an "S" version.
That's all I remember off the top of my head.

Minor problem of accelerated rear tire wear due to stock alignment in the 95. No problem if they are realigned. Factory apparently changed the alignment for 96-98.

Good luck on the search!

daka,

1995: 270 hp, OBDI and no CEL issues.
1996 - 98: 282 hp, OBDII and CEL issues.

They are all great cars (993), but for less "issues" w/ the CEL you may want to find a '95. Good luck w/ your search.
