Steve,

Welcome to the Forum.
You will find a lot of help here.

I would try and find a period engine for your car. A ‘71 2.2 T would be the most correct but a 2.2E/S or 2.4T/E/S would be fun. Although some disagree, a 2.8S is about as much torque and hp your Type 911 transmission will tolerate and have reasonable longevity. You can build a 2.7RS or 2.8S and have it look as if it was a ‘71T – a real “wolf in sheep’s clothing.”

If you decide to go bigger, a 915 transmission is in order.

Your 901/01 can be a standby for a while but eventually should go to someone needing that engine for his ’66 911.

Tell us more about the car.

Best,
Grady

Grady, thanks for the response. i hope to have pix of the restoration soon. i'm intrigued at the idea of a 2.7 or 2.8, should i use this case or should i get a 71 case? i've been using the 915 trans for years with my 84 and havent had much time with a 911 trans but a recent short drive with it really impressed me........ seems like a sweet setup with very smooth throws. a friend refers to it as the " gentlemans" gearbox. how much hp can they handle?

Deisel, i'll have more info on the engine soon.
thanks
steve

If you will post the engine number, that will answer all questions.

From that number I'm guessing it was made in September of 1965 (the factory is closed in August and it's 400 engine numbers past the ones made toward the end of July. So it should be a Solex engine with center-lubed cams.

I have seen these sell for $1000 for a core condition engine, more if in better condition.
