SSI's
I hear the term SSI used as if were an exhaust part maker. The next sentence makes SSIs sould like a part, no different from a cam. Multiple people make cams but they are not all the same. I would like a list of the makers of SSI exhaust systems, who markets them, and what experiences have you had with the various brands.
Thanks, |

SSI is a company, not a product, but their main claim to fame is their stainless steel heat exchangers and headers, which have kind of become synonmous with them. There are other compannies, such as Triad and B&B, who make stainless exhaust components but those are not "SSI's".

So, if I see a true SSI product for sale, I can compare prices across retailers because they are the same product? Does SSI offer different levels of quality? Basically, I am looking for the best value in a stainless steel, pre-74 style exhaust system.
Thanks, |

SSI is:
Stainless Systems, Inc. 20 Pamaron Way Novato, CA 94949 That info came right off the outside of the box that my heat exchangers were shipped in. I paid $799 for the pair from Europroducts (1-800-962-0911). I'd seen lots of other places sell them from $500 to $599 for a single side. I wouldn't mind paying these high prices for these things if that's what it takes for SSI to make them and stay in business. They make a very good product. I've since been told by a local shop that they could have bought them wholesale for me, for about $250 a side. That's some good markup! That I cannot see paying! ------------------ Greg 72 911S |

Greg, give me that number of the shop, NOW! SSI's are actually superior to the OE equipment on Porsche. The price is what determines why they are not included on new cars. The fit and finish are excellent, especially compared to many aftermarket exhaust component manufacturers. I am curious about that wholesale price. I would imagine a major supplier that you bought your SSI's off of would get the best price break by way of volume. I have never seen these for less then the price you got yours for. Perhaps your local vendor is trying to make you feel bad?
Generally, when a vendor is ordering something from a manufacturer, like my Recaro seat I just ordered, they have very little to do other than order and then either have it drop shipped or sent from their location. They may make $25 to $50 a seat, but for very little work other then being a dealer. I would bet the wholesale price on SSI's is $650 to $700 a set, so don't feel bad Greg. |

Good morning Guys! I bought my SSi's at a swap meet for $500, this year at the Sunset Imports swap meet in Beaverton, OR there was a set for the 3.2 motor for $650 and looked very clean and new. I guess what I am saying is look arond for used before you buy new. If you can find a set that looks clean a little use won't hurt them, remember we are talking about exhaust systems not your girl friend!
