Towing W/ Uhaul

Has anyone towed w/ a Uhal car hauler? I'm towing mine w/ one next week end. A typical 911 would work fine, but I have the 930 S fiberglass spoiler w/ only 5 inches of clearance. Getting the car on the tailer should be easy. The problem is my spoiler is 5" and the front part of the trailer where the tire sits against is also 5". I'm thinking of building up w/ 2 pices of 2x material. Then the spoiler would clear by 3". I'm hoping that this would be enough, but I'm affraid that if I hit a big bump that the suspension will compress more the 3" and break my spioler.

Anyone have any advise?

Thanks,

Gary

My idea is to use 2 pices of 2x materal and drilling through the Uhaul ramp and fastening them w/ cariage bolts anf contact cementing a rubber pad on top of the wood to keep the car from sliding side to side.

This sounds like the right solution. Not alot of weight at the front of these Turbos, right? Plus , you've got the suspension of your tow vehicle to help even out the bumps.

I've towed mine tiwice on a uhaul. Its been a while but both times I remember I removed a bolt on a part at the front of the trailer to clear the front spoiler. That worked great, 2 bolts each side just bolted back on before I returned the trailer. To get the car loaded is a different story. Mine is at Euro height and you can't unload it with the ramps the way they are The tub will drag as you load/ unload. I usually pull the trailer down into a ditch or back up to a steep hill or approach of some type to cut down the angle on the ramps, then just drive on or off.

I'll probably load the car on my driveway. It has a slight incline and if that isn't enough I'll buy some planks from Loews and put the under the ramps.

Unfortunatelly, the part on the front of the trailer that I looked at doesn't unbolt. Uhaul probably has more than one type of trailer. Hopefully, the will have one like you mentioned when I pick up the traile on Sunday.

I nailed two 2x6 boards together for each of the front wheels and that worked great for me. That got my front end high enough to get over the wheel stop so I could strap the wheels down.

Thanks Mark, know I know it can be done. BTW, you have a great looking car. I had to check it out to see if it is similar to mine.

I picked up my 72 a month ago, no engine or trans in it. Drive about 200 miles towing with a 2000 F250. I ran about 80mph the entire way. I tied the rear of the car down using a ratchet strap around the trailer and rear body. The car did bounce a little when I hit bumps but only moved an inch or so. The Uhaul Car Haulers tow very nicely.

Towing on UHaul's "auto transport" (trailer) is a dream. I just brought my 72 from San Antonio back up to Killeen using their tow dolly. Put it on facing rearward so the driven wheels and heavy end were on the dolly, reversed the front wheels side to side so the directional tires rolled the correct way, and emptied the 911's rear tires of air to angulate the car a bit and buy me a little more nose clearance with the ground at the other end. Worked out fine as always.

I towed my RSR from Hartford to Watkins Glen last year using a rented U-Haul trailer

My RSR has been lowered and has the standard RSR type cooler valence. I had to make ramps out of 2X10's to get the car on and off the trailer. I also had to make small platforms from 2X10's to raise the car on the trailer to allow me to open the door and clear the trailer fenders.

Did you find the trailer fish-tailed set up that way? I have noticed the 911 will tend to do that if placed facing forward on some trailers, as the weight is concentrated in the back.

We did not have any problem with fishtailing. That problem generally will occur if the car is too far back on the trailer CG of the car behind the rear wheels of the trailer.

When i towed my 911 with a U-haul I had to load the car car rear first as the front spoiler was too low to clear the front of the trailer and would not allow the straps to reach the rear of the front wheels. This trailer looked quite different from those pictured in this thread.

That's the problem I had. That's why I nailed the 2x6s together. I drove up onto them and it lifted the car enough to get the spoiler to clear.
