How do you stay out of your 911?

Ok guys, when I got my car after Thanksgiving ’88 Carrera Cabriolet, I was not even a convertible guy but figured I hate the way the car looks with the top up, so I will just park it through the winter and pull it out in spring? I also told my wife and explained to her convincing her to let me get it in the first place about how if we keep the miles low the value stays high etc…etc… Well here we are into early January 2008 and I’ve logged 1000 miles since I picked my 58K mile car up. I can’t stay out of it. It sits in the garage mostly during the work week, but then I find the stupidest and most meaningless reasons to take her out for a drive….to the P.O Box, pick up stamps, one or two things at the store…I go out for 40-80 mile driving session into the country and canyons on the weekend? I told myself I wanted to stay under 80K miles, but I’m slowly telling myself who cares……. I’m living the dream just drive……..IT! my 911 is the most addicting car to drive that I've ever owned.

the only thing that keeps me out of my car is more than an inch of snow on the ground

Hey Ryan,
Don't make the same mistake the last owner did. Use it up. The last guy saved the car for you. Don't you save it for the next guy. As far as explaining the mileage to your wife... That's up to you.

Drive the car and stop worrying about the miles, its a car and a nice one at that but its meant to be driven,I could see if it were a 65 shelby GT-350R or equivelent, but its not so drive her.

Why punish yourself? I bought an '88 Carrera last year and I have put 20k+ miles on it already. I drive it in the rain, snow, sleet, and of course sunny weather. After all, it is a car and I am getting every pennies worth. It is my daily driver on my 30 mile (each way) commute through the northern Oregon hills.

Take the muffler off, stiffen the suspension, put a roll cage in, lower it to about an inch off the ground. That should do it.

Congrats on your purchase and I know exactly what you mean, it's freakin addictive. I've got to pick my brother up tonight at 11:35pm at Portland Aiport, which is 1 hour away on a two lane highway, and of course it's raining. I am trying to tell myself it would be much better to take one of our other daily drivers but man...

Hey your not to far from me. Once the weather gets nice we've got to get a group of people for some drives. Mcminnville is a cute little town too with some nice eateries.

Snow, ice, and salt on the road. It's a real mood killer.

Nothing is more expensive than a car parked in the garage that never gets driven. High cost, low enjoyment. Unless you are a hobby curator.

Salt on the roads (& occasional snow) keeps me out of my car during the winter. And while it is tempting to take it out on the non-snow days (especially with the warm weather we have been having this winter), I cannot because I dropped the liability & collision insurance for the winter.

While it is difficult to keep it covered it does create a sense of anticipation for the spring. Each spring it is like Christmas when I take the cover off the 911. And in a weird way it makes me appreciate driving the car more than I would if I could drive it all year.

For me it is not about the miles, but rather about preserving the car (i.e., no salt) for many years.

Being an obsessive freak about the condition of the car helps. As does the resulting situation of constantly having the thing half disassembled working on or restoring/cleaning something.

Drive it like no tomorrow!

If the wife complains, just say, "I'm a man and it can't be helped!"

I've got snow covered roads that now have about an inch of ice on them. No salt, No spike tires so ... No SC in winter.

I'm thinking about moving back to LA just to drive all year round

Snow, ice, salt & the engine on a stand does it for me.

Ryan:

I'm another 911 owner with 6" of snow outside- but I hear ya! Just wait until we get those warm, early summer days- you'll be truly smitten then! FWIW, I believe the good doctor himself always believed these cars were built to be driven, not parked in a garage and babied...

Bob:

+1 to what Oregonmon said! I hope you can join us for an arrive & drive this year. Check out the posts in the Pacific Northwest forum.

Oregonmon:

I sincerely hope you picked your brother up in the 911! Can't wait for the first A&D!

Cheers,

Paul.

Ryan...I know the feeling well. When I first bought my car way back in 85 all I wanted to do was drive it. There was this little pizza shop a half mile down the road. I would call..order a pizza. They would tell me it would be ready in 20 mins so I would go out a take a 20 minute drive. To this day I never take the mileage on the speedos to be accurate.
