Car died on freeway
hi all,
just picked up a 74 911 coupe, and while on my way it died on the freeway. had the tow truck towed it home. tried to start it with a battery charger but no luck, not even a cranking sound from the engine. it is as if the battery is completely disconnected from the engine. could it be the alternator? any ideas? thanks |

Did you test the battery? I'd start with checking the grounds, testing the starter/starter circuit...

Also check where the (+) cable connects to the starter.
Make sure it is not loose on the starter or the cable has not pulled out of the connector.

Just a possibility.
Did you happen to notice if the alternator lite was flickering or glowing at driving speed? If you have a loose ground from the battery negative to the car body in your trunk, you can run the battery low enough for car to die and refuse to start. Took me about 8 miles coming back down the Tail of the Dragon last Spring. Lynnsabcs |

You seem to have a couple of things going on there... start with the easy stuff first
Fully recharge you battery and test it... make sure it is healthy... Car would not start - bad battery, loose connection. This is where I would start to check. Also, because you see the cable connected to the terminal does not mean is ok, I had a situation in my 91 where the threads at the terminal were broken, from the outside it all look well but only a few threads were making contact... check the terminals and pull the rubber to validate your terminal to wire is fine. Check them at the battery end and at the starter end. In my case I even went to the extreme of replacing the starter... only to find out it was the positive cable terminal... live and learn... Car dies on the hwy could be several things - check coil and then alternator... Best of luck.
