I suppose it's bad form to say it here - I absolutely HATE the "rat rod" idea, in any incarnation. American classics or German cars.

I think it looks terrible.

OK, I've said it, and won't repeat it.

That is not a Rat Rod...flat paint does not make a Rat....I HotRod in my alternate life...a Rat Rod is rusty/visibly patched/a conglomeration of parts that may-may not belong together esthetically etc...
That fine looking flat black Porsche is a 'Traditional Rod'....

Nope, and no one, I mean no one puts shag carpet in a rod....A flatty, and primer are 'traditional rods' from the 40-50's...they were in primer because the young owner couldn't afford to paint it 'yet' but was forever hopeful and flatheads were cheap and plenitful.....as are SBC's today.
Rat Rod is a modern term...no one 'in the day' would let their car rust purposely ergo the primer.
A Rat is purposely left to rust to make 'modern' look patina (not my cup of whatever) and is a new deal.
Ya'll are actually talking about traditional Rods....nice work with a flat paint as was seen in the 50's....I had a 1940 Ford/283 SBC in the 60's and it was flat black....because I couldn't afford a paint job.

Nice as it sounds aren't "rat rods" just what we used to call "beaters". I mean there's nothing glorious about them unless some cake holes start building them to sell as "cool".

I like a good rod with patina. To me a rat rod is a healthy car that you would be happy to drive as is. Some have super patina, others not so much. If a car doesn't have the look, I'd rather see it finished out, or at least primered.

I don't know art, but I know it when it is absent. I like a good honest car, not a deliberate statement. Jackson Pollock can stay home.

As Brooklyn resident looking for a good 911 with bad paint, I'm loving this thread. While some of these cars are simple pieces of crap, a lot of them look great with character.

My favorites are the ones that are straight and well sorted, but have paint you'll never need to fret over.

welcome to the rat pack...............it's not just about artfully crafted rust..............it's a way of being. A frame of mind.

How odd. I saw that same car, and several other modified VW's while I was in Prague. There seems to be some Bug enthusiast there.

I found this 54 Coupe several years ago. Sitting in a garage, hadn't been driven in 25 years. There is your shag carpet and paisley corduroy headliner, with airplane oil cooler. All done in the late 60's. Truly Vintage Rat/Outlaw!!
